Duchess’s police motorcycle escort hits elderly woman in London

A woman in her 80s is in a critical condition after being hit by a police motorcycle that was escorting the Duchess of Edinburgh.

The incident happened at 3.21pm on Wednesday at the junction of Cromwell Road and Warwick Road in west London, the Metropolitan police said.

Buckingham Palace said the duchess, Sophie, who is married to Prince Edward, was “grateful for the swift response by the emergency services”.

In a short statement, the palace said: “The duchess’s heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the injured lady and her family.

A woman in her 80s who was hit by a police motorbike that was escorting Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, is reportedly in a coma.

Helen Holland, 81, from Birchanger, Essex - named by the BBC - was left in a critical condition after the collision at around 3.21pm on Wednesday in west London.

Her son and daughter-in-law Martin and Lisa-Marie Holland told the broadcaster they were "shocked and sickened at her extensive injuries".

The family is reportedly calling for a "thorough investigation".

A criminal investigation has been launched into the death of an elderly woman who was struck by police escorting the Duchess of Edinburgh.

Helen Holland, 81, was hit by a police motorbike at a junction in Earl's Court, west London, on 10 May.

The police watchdog said the constable riding the vehicle was being investigated for offences including causing death by dangerous driving.
