Still Waters Posted June 3, 2023 #1 Share Posted June 3, 2023 On the principle of strength in numbers, parents in the Irish town of Greystones have banded together to collectively tell their children they cannot have a smartphone until secondary school. Parents’ associations across the district’s eight primary schools have adopted a no-smartphone code to present a united front against children’s lobbying. “If everyone does it across the board you don’t feel like you’re the odd one out. It makes it so much easier to say no,” said Laura Bourne, who has a child in junior infants. “The longer we can preserve their innocence the better.” Schools and parents in the County Wicklow town took the initiative last month amid concern smartphones were fuelling anxiety and exposing children to adult material. It is a rare example of an entire town taking joint action on the issue. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/jun/03/much-easier-to-say-no-irish-town-unites-in-smartphone-ban-for-young-children 3

I've heard of this being used at universities during testing sessions. How could they be used selectively without stopping all cell traffic? I remember one smart chick making one from cell phone when she got annoyed with people constantly on their phone on the bus))) I'll try to find the link. WVK Posted September 3, 2023 #5 Share Posted September 3, 2023 IT is one of the toughest decisions faced by parents – when to give in to their younger children’s constant demands for a smartphone. Startling recent figures from communications regulator Ofcom show that 20 per cent of kids have a smartphone by the age of three, and that rises to 55 per cent between the ages of eight to 11. But the residents of one seaside town in Ireland have decided they do not want their little ones to spend their most formative years peering into a tiny LCD screen. The entire parent population of Greystones in County Wicklow got together to agree not to buy smartphones for their kids until they were in secondary school. https://www.the-sun.com/news/8985991/inside-town-banned-kids-from-mobile-phones/

One thing I saw bandied around is that by using tech with children to keep them occupied we’re killing off boredom which inevitably leads to imagination, in effect by not leaving your kid to be bored while you’re doing the shopping and telling them to come up with a story in their head to entertain themselves we’re creating people who do not cope well without stimulation and may be affecting the next generation of creatives. 1
spartan max2 Posted September 4, 2023 #8 Share Posted September 4, 2023 (edited) "the results were astounding" says an article that mentions no results lol. Not really any data here. Parents who did it think they made the right decision, like of course they do, most parents believe the way they are raising their kids is the correct. A bit of confirmation bias. It would be interesting to see this is a study with varies valid tools and measurements. And even after that there is the potential cofounder factor that parents willing to do these may already be more involved in their children's life than other parents.
