pellinore Posted June 8 #1 Share Posted June 8 (edited) I'm not one to criticize Brexit. It's done, and it is up to everyone to try to make it work. But the government has now officially said a trade deal with the US is now not possible, despite it being trailed as one of the great benefits of leaving the EU: Rishi Sunak denied on Thursday there had been a “broken promise” on Brexit despite the failure to deliver the much-trumpeted US-UK free trade deal seven years after the referendum on quitting the EU. Economists say Brexit will cost workers in the UK around £1,300 a year, compared to if the country had stayed in the European trading bloc. The Government has trumpeted trade deals with other countries but they amount to only a fraction of the business done with EU nations which has been hit by the UK splintering away from the major trading bloc. Farming chiefs and former Environment Secretary George Eustice have also criticised a trade pact struck by the Government with Australia, which they say is biased against the agricultural sector in Britain. The Brexiteers’ pledge that quitting the EU would allow Britain to take back control of its borders is also in tatters with net legal migration having risen to more than 600,000 a year, and thousands of people risking their lives to cross the Channel in “small boats” to reach the UK. I've said before I'm no longer interested n Brexit per se. Brexit is done, we all have to live with it. I just report on what I think is interesting news, as I do on many other topics. Certain aspects relating to Brexit, such as Sunak now saying a US/UK trade deal is off the table, is current news (and quite amusing as he blames Covid and Ukraine, those two old standbys) and is reported in many outlets, for example: Rishi Sunak blames pandemic and war in Ukraine for failure to strike US trade deal | Politics News | Sky News Edited June 9 by pellinore 1 Top
