Rioting in France

Recommended Posts

Attackers in France tried to set fire to the home of a suburban Paris mayor's home overnight and fired rockets at the official's fleeing wife and children.

The incident has caused widespread shock and is being treated as attempted murder. Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne described it as intolerable.

Mayor Vincent Jeanbrun was not at home, but his wife suffered a broken leg and a child was also hurt.

France has seen violent protests after police killed a teenager on Tuesday.

The suspects in the incident in L'Haÿ-les-Roses, south of Paris, have not been identified.

Rioting goes back centuries there.

You're right, but these particular riots seem particularly severe. It is also clear to me that there is a racial element.

It is going to take a long time, if ever to sort the mess out. The problem is, thousands of people, mostly men, are crossing the Med and feeling grievance that they do not have what the Europeans have. I guess the same problem is happening in the US.

"The first is the colour of your skin and your surname. The second is where you live. For people who are called Sofiane or Mohammed, it's more difficult living in a working-class area, having access to schools, accommodation and getting a job."

Poverty, racism and drugs mean clashes with police aren't rare here, but this widespread looting is an escalation and a worrying sign.

Not quite the same, they came to France voluntarily.

Immigrants don't go to the US voluntarily? Do you mean they are forced by wars etc in their own countries? That's what is fuelling the immigrants to come to Europe.

Oh yes, of course. That's a whole other can of worms. You (I'm guessing you are US-based) can't just get angry, because you caused the problems yourself.

Nothing new there. Corruption that leads to widespread rioting and destruction? Shocked, shocked I say.

Oh, I think this may be a little different than the same-old, same-old:

When "protesters" begin using RPGs on police stations, it may be time to exercise a little tough love...

More than €1 million (£860,000) has been raised for the family of a French police officer who shot dead a teenager at a traffic stop, an act that sparked riots across the country. That is far more than a similar campaign for the family of the boy killed.

The online fundraiser started by Jean Messiha, an independent right-wing populist and former adviser to Marine Le Pen, has attracted donations from more than 52,000 people, while a fund set up by the policeman’s colleagues has raised around €60,000.

The kid had a long history of vehicle related crimes.

And the French police got the power to shoot at rogue drivers due to the numpties driving into people. I wonder what went on in the car. Did the kid convincing tell the police officer he was going to drive into people?

Riots have blazed through Paris, Marseille and Lyon, after police fatally shot 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk. The violence comes as France reaches a tipping point after an influx of migrants over recent years. “The heart of the problem is this parallel society that has grown up within France, the lost territories and politicians have known about this for 20 years,” The Spectator’s Gavin Mortimer told Sky News Digital Originals.
