Uploading our minds to a computer might actually become possible

Isn't this the premise of Kurzweil's book - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Singularity_Is_Near  ?

I have no doubt that capacity for memory and speed of processing could someday create a perfect copy of the actions of a human brain.  For those of us who believe we are more than just our biology though, no such process can ever equate to "eternal life/consciousness".

It is silly, in my opinion, to want to be immortal.  I think the Guardians of the Universe showed how an immmortal being might become so insane as to need to be killed.   Just one example I agree with about the immortal idea, there would be so much boredom that things would become quite chaotic with immmortals trying to find some form of entertainment, with no regard to others.

It is a poor analogy to compare the human brain to the hardware of a computer and an even poorer one to think of the Universe as some complex machine that was created and then left to run 'of its own accord'.

Descartes was working within the misguided frame of the oversimplified platonically western christeo derived cosmology of his age when he came up with the notion and because humans love one thing seemingly above all others... which is oversimplifying notions of complex realities into short sound bytes that feel good when transitioned into belief based assumptions instead of exploring and discovering reality as it unfolds in the co-arising interdependency of the aggregates of what is... so it really stuck in the egregore of the western psyche, much to the collective detriment of all we touch.

C'est la vie.  But no human mind computer chips for us.

So, I will assume for the moment that someday it can be done.   Does it wipe my organic brain when it is copied or is the electronic record  a duplicate?  How many duplicate can be made?  Would they all be me?   Will they be independent or  somehow entangled?  If they are independent, will they evolve differently based on experiences?  If my copies have access to the internet and all of its sensors and cameras around the world  will I be omnipotent?  Would all of that exposure make me wiser or just ubiquitous?

If I can control my electronic environment, could I create a memory and present  data cache shaped by my desires?  Would my commands be law in this little subspace of the internet?  Would I become god and this my heaven?  If it fulfills all of my desires would I retreat into this space and disappear from larger reality?

We could surely write a series of science fiction short stories or novels  about this topic with everybody's different views.

Yes or No.

It depends on the question.

It would just be a copy of a person's consciousness. Not the actual person themselves.

But would I get an hour on the holodeck with Seven of Nine?

Don't you remember?  Or maybe your electronic copy didn't share that memory with you?

Article mentions Black Mirror (show). If anyone's interested, it's pretty awesome. Reminds me of The Twilight Zone or Philip K Dick.

I believe one day science will be able to copy the human mind to a computer and it will be nothing but a copy. That’s a weird feeling however to know your physical body and mind will one day perish but a simulated version will continue on. I can almost guarantee you my simulated version would be p***ed stuck in some computer or synthetic robotic copy.

Exactly on point, if there's no way of decoding the data, how is verifying the encoding be checked for errors...

My question would be , can i communicate directly with my portion , or say copy , that is uploaded? I mean , would we be directly connected , or would i just have to "type" , to it?

When I was a kid, I uploaded my mind to a Sinclair ZX81 microcomputer.

56KB of RAM was plenty!

Seeing we learn something new each day they would only be copying the mind up to that second, the next second it would be an outdated copy. In that second you might have a life changing idea.

I’d rather have my brain put in a canister and have the Fungi from Yuggoth fly me around the cosmos.
