Hanslune Posted July 27, 2023 #1 Share Posted July 27, 2023 Had a musing encounter with a true believer who was using the book above as a 'source' for extra-terrestrial aliens swarming over earth in ancient and classical times. In the off-chance that the well-read folks here have not seen it I present it for their amusement & edification: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/45858/45858-h/45858-h.htm Written in the 2nd AD in Greek of course! From the wiki: It is the earliest known work of fiction to include travel to outer space, alien lifeforms, and interplanetary warfare. It has been described as "the first known text that could be called science fiction". However, the work does not fit into typical literary genres: its multilayered plot and its characters have been interpreted as belonging to science fiction, fantasy, satire or parody, and have been the subjects of scholarly debate. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_True_Story. My good friend was pretending or was deluded enough to consider it 'history'.

Despite: "The novel begins with an explanation that the story is not at all "true", and that everything in it is a complete and utter lie." Seems reasonable to believe the exact opposite. 2 1

Most people who 'quote' it have never read it. Instead they are shown very carefully selected portions of it by UFO/ancient aliens gurus - out of context - if you do that you can pretend its a history of ancient space flight! Stuff like: "I once assembled all the poor people and needy persons within my dominions, purposing to send a colony to inhabit the Morning Star (Venus)", or "After seven days of sailing through the air they arrive on the Moon, only to learn its inhabitants are at war with the people of the Sun. Both parties are fighting for control of a colony on the Morning Star (Venus). The warriors for the Sun and Moon armies travel through space on winged acorns and giant gnats and horses as big as ships, armed with outlandish weapons like slingshots that used enormous turnips as ammunition. Thousands die during the battle, and blood [falls] upon the clouds, which made them look of a red color; as sometimes they appear to us about sun-setting" All the above is seen as 'spaceships'.
