False claims that heatwave is bogus spread online

False claims suggesting that the BBC has been misreporting temperatures in southern Europe have been spreading on social media.

A clip of Neil Oliver, a GB News presenter, accusing the BBC "and others" of "driving fear" by using "supposedly terrifying temperatures", has been viewed more than two million times.

For the past few weeks, an intense heatwave has been sweeping through parts of southern Europe and north Africa, with extensive wildfires breaking out in Greece, Italy and Algeria - leading to more than 40 deaths.

What Neil Oliver says is true. Even in the worst of the heatwave here temperatures never went above 25' and even that was only on one day! 40' ?! we'd all be dead!

Is the Washington Post lying about the US heatwave as well?

The brutal heat wave across the southern United States — remarkable for its size, intensity and duration — is still going strong, with little hope for significant relief. In fact, forecasts show the extreme heat expanding through this weekend, with approximately 80 million people experiencing a temperature or heat index above 105 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, and continuing well into next week.

The Met Office’s Mark McCarthy, who works in the team responsible for weather and climate records, said: “It’s officially the hottest June on record for the UK, for mean temperature as well as average maximum and minimum temperature.

“June started with a good deal of high pressure and temperatures initially around average for many, but once that subsided, warm, humid air began to influence temperatures, with 32.2°C the highest temperatures reached.

“What’s striking is the persistent warmth for much of the month, with temperatures widely into the mid 20s Celsius for many and even into the low 30s at times.”

Neil Oliver is bonkers, like the rest of the GBN presenters:

Meteorologists are warning temperatures will hit new record highs across southern Europe this week.

The latest forecasts show peaks of 44C (111.2F) on multiple days, with temperatures consistently in the high 30s and low 40s across the region.

The Foreign Office has issued extreme weather warnings for Britons travelling to Italy, Spain or Greece - advising them to heed local advice but adding they will not be compensated if they choose to cancel their trips.

I remember back in the 1970s, the big concern was global cooling The media reported a new ice age is in the beginning due to the harsh winters.

Nowadays, they say it's global warming aka climate change.

Temperatures have soared so high in Arizona that cacti are keeling over and dying, a botanical garden has revealed.

Saguaro cacti in the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, are rotting from the inside out because of record-breaking temperatures which have remained above 43C for nearly all of July.

The plants are “beautifully adapted to heat and aridity, but they have their limits,” the garden’s chief science officer Kimberlie McCue said.

She told CNN they appear “fairly normal” before suddenly losing limbs or giving way completely, having been left “highly stressed” by the temperatures.

I was just considering the UK in my post above. It didn't even get anywhere near 40' in London although the weathermen predicted it would. What we are experiencing here in the UK is hardly different from what I have experienced in my lifetime . . . Goodness! we've just had the coolest, wettest July for a while; right on the back of that 'heatwave'!

Of course it's in the high 30s/low 40s in SOUTHERN Europe. There's a big hint right there in the name! Nothing new there; Brits have always been warned about the heat when holidaying abroad.

edit to say: Neil Oliver is a clever man who is able to see the big picture that so many can't.

Your post was wrong.  You claim it only went above of 25c on just one day. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

The Met Office has issued a fresh heatwave warning as Britons can expect temperatures to reach 40C in the future.

Mercury will peak at similar levels to last summer when Coningsby in Lincolnshire recorded 40.3C.

The UK’s national weather service does not believe 2022’s temperatures were an isolated incident.

If you want to see what actual real weather stations are reporting - anywhere in the world - then this is a great site:

https://weatherobs.com/

You can then see for yourself whether it's really 40c in the Mediterranean .....

No real meteorologist has issued any forecast predicting temps of 40c in the UK this year - that was July last year (when it did indeed reach 40c).   Don't get your weather forecasts from the front page of the Daily Express ;)

This year it's been the coolest July (for central England, anyway) since..... 2020.   The highest temp recorded this month was 30.2c in Chertsey on the 7th.

They're leaning toward blaming the Jet Stream for Europe's hot weather.

https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2022/08/jet-stream-winds-fuelling-heatwaves/

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-022-31432-y

Here in the states when the Jet Stream gets too far north it gets hotter in the lower 48 states and that is where the Jet Stream is now way up in Canada.

Just a guess. But back in the 70s when the winters were harsh. The jet stream must have been further south allowing the arctic air to move further down.

I just realized something else which is misleading about this article.

From the article:

"There has not been a single overnight low under 32.2C since July 9, which means residents cannot recover after the sun goes down and are more susceptible to heatstroke."

This is due to Phoenix and cities, in general, being Urban Heat Islands.  It is especially more noticeable at night, when the heat captured by pavement and buildings during the day continues to warm the city after the sun goes down. Large cities can be as much as 12 °C warmer than their surrounding environments in the evening.

Here's a screenshot of the location of Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix from google maps.

The Red pin is its location:
