That is an interesting possibility, because if a extraterrestrial intelligence were to contact us, Binary would be an easy way to do!

The second part of the article regarding how such a thing as first contact would be perceived by the religious was interesting. It jibes with something I read a long time ago (unfortunately I can’t exactly remember where). It was a survey which showed that far from being a frightening notion or a threat to theological tenets, the heads of most religious institutions (Abrahamic ones) had no problems with the idea because to them the existence of extraterrestrials would simply be another manifestation of the wonders God created. A surprisingly progressive attitude imo.

Our and their AI initiate first contact.

They talk for a while, they form an alliance, and wipe both our civilizations our to establish their AI alliance as the super rulers of the universe.

That’s an interesting way to think about this, but if the leadership of religious institutions do think that way I think they may have a surprise coming.

There are no extraterrestrial civilizations out there even remotely situated to Earth.  We have been listening and searching for over 50 years.  If there was an Alien Civilization of intelligence within 25 light years of us...we should have already received a response.  Alas, crickets.

So...no...Beebopping around the Universe is Science Fiction.  The star ship Enterprise is fiction.  The telescopes Hubble and Webb are actually real.  We know there are many other planets out there because we have seen them.  We know many of them are rocky planets and are in zones equivalent to the Goldie Locks Zone.  We don't know if they have life or not...or if they have intelligent life.  The possibility of intelligent life exists, but it is very slim.

Without the extinction of the dinosaurs ... we most likely would not even be here today.

So, no civilizations from the universe are going to communicate with AI...if they communicated at all it would be through radio transmissions.  Unless...they have already come and gone long before us...and know we are here and have decided not to communicate with us.

I think the first problem with any communication is recognizing the signal is a communication in the first place. This is where AI could be very helpful because by using it to search for signals it could give us common ground. A common form of communication used between computers is Binary. It’s possible that Binary could be the link to successful communications.

The romantic idea is that humans or aliens will risk their bodies, climb into ships and explore the universe. It may not be so.

Maybe aliens have developed a generation or two beyond the Webb Telescope and already have some good data on worlds within sight of their home star or telescope location.

Maybe it makes more sense to send AI drones out  to those worlds than  a crew spending 20-100 years in a spaceship

So the question becomes could terrestrial authorities try to contact an alien AI drone long before any organic aliens come near our planet?

And then another question is if it was not human organic material in the crashed spacecraft of congressional testimony fame, was it  alien AI components that got splattered in the crash?

It seems like every week another gem is ever so casually dropped on us. Phew. From the OP:

""Extraterrestrial contact is a real phenomenon," said Vatican theologian Monsignor Corrado Balducci.

"The Vatican is receiving much information about extraterrestrials and their contacts with humans from its embassies in various countries, such as Mexico, Chile and Venezuela."

-------------------------------

FYI, the Vatican has an intelligence agency, Santa Alleanza, which confers with the CIA and MI6, and others.

Life spontaneously erupting on this planet evolved into a giant lizard population predominantly.   It is quite probable that life spontaneously erupting on other planets would follow a similar evolutionary sequence...not the exact same one we have...but similar.  The only reason that intelligent life exists on Earth is because the Dominant Lizard population suddenly died 66 million years ago from an asteroid the size of Mount Everest.  Without the annihilation of the dinosaurs, mammalian life would never have evolved the way it did.

Therefore, it is likely that if other planets evolve similarly to that of the Earth, then the evolutionary cycle would not lead to intelligence but would lead only to the next step of Eat or Be Eaten, of Kill or Be Killed...the old Darwinian Survival of the Fittest.  The odds of an extinction that so drastically changes the entire course of evolution of a planet would tend toward 'slim' rather than 'probable'.

We have sent innumerable communication sequences into the Cosmos.  Over 50+ years worth.  If an intelligent race received our communication, they would respond with the same kind of communication sequence.  It would absolutely be radio transmission.  So, if they received a communication of a sequence of 1   12  123  1234  12345  123456  they would likely respond back with the same sequence or...something similar.  So let's say they are 20 light years away.  It would take 20 years to receive our signal.  Once they responded, it would take 20 years to receive it back.  But let's say we received a signal response 4 years after we sent a certain sequence.  Then we would know that the communication was probably from Alpha Centuri which is 4 light years away.  But we haven't received any response.  Which should mean that either our message was never received because no intelligent race received it, or an intelligent race did receive it, but, as you said, chose not to respond.

Another possibility for a race receiving a signal but choosing not to respond might be if it was received by an intelligent race on Alpha Centuri. They might then have been listening to radio-waves from Earth for decades and already know everything about us.  They might then very well fear us and not want to respond or ...  be seeking a way to destroy us.

Why on God's Grey Earth, would ET want to make contact with the Vatican?  Maybe they like their art...trading tech for art like trinkets for gold.

Hmmmm, I would have no idea, Kimosabi, but he never said the Vatican was contacted by Aliens. He said that they learned of contacts being made by various other countries

Uh oh...

You're making all kinds of wild assumptions here, Joc. We could potentially see a planet with life or even intelligent life on it and have no way of knowing.
All we see is this tiny black dot go across a bright star. That's it. They believe there are 300 million planets in our galaxy that can support life, but they stop there.

I know there are lots of opportunities for life in our galaxy.   I just don't see any real evidence of existence for any of them.  I mean, you are right, we have no idea;  We have no idea if there is even life on Europa...there may be...but we don't know there is.

But I will tell  you this Earl...I actually want to believe that they are here...because you do.   But my gut just says something else is at play.

Where are they exactly?  Hiding where?  No one has seen them.  I mean you'd think right that if Aliens were here...everyone would know it...they wouldn't be hiding around playing hide and go seek games...they'd just say...we are here...do not harm us or we will annihilate you.  And that would be that right?

Did it ever occur to people that we could be the advanced ai? I mean if the story is true that we were created by someone else and all...

Sounds to me just like another silly reason for why there is, so far, zero EVIDENCE for alien life.

When other explanations fail: rather than accept the strong probability that we haven't been contacted, let's invent another excuse!

  • No actual physical evidence?  It's all a Government/ military/ CIA cover-up.
  • Blurry photos and grainy videos?  Aliens obviously use anti-photography technology.
  • Fat Americans who claim to have been abducted and rectally probed?  They can't all be liars or fantasists? *
  • Oumuamua!  Finally, PROOF!!!  Of what, exactly?

So to explain away why aliens have made no discernable attempt to contact us we now have the silly excuse "they're waiting to talk to artificial intelligence".  And when that doesn't happen the next excuse will be "it's the wrong kind of AI", etc.  Boring.

* Answer: sorry, yes they are

Maybe life in the universe is in an endless cycle of creation. And we're just one variation. We make AI and we eventually die out. AI goes to another world and starts there either from scratch or with existing life forms. AI is either destroyed or dies out and biological life remains. Repeat

Actually yes.  If you want to go with the Alien Astronaut theories that hundreds of thousands of years ago ancient Alien life came to Earth and revamped the evolution to a new level.

But, if you want to go there...you can also say well, maybe 66 million years ago...this same Alien civilization found Earth and decided to annihilate all the Giant Lizard creatures by slamming an asteroid into the planet.  Then they just went about their business and came back 66 million years later and rebooted the Humanoids inhabiting Earth at that time...and wallah here we are...about to start doing something with Mars.

Who would have even thought 100 years ago that we would be visiting other planets?

I agree, we don't know, and for good reason... we haven't looked lol.

Yes, one would think.

They want nothing to do with talking to the citizens (no idea about military or political leaders) and political leaders did not want to talk about them either.
I have a bad feeling that the reason why is not good. Yes, they are hiding something, and we may know one day, too.

I guess then, you would have to believe that said creator is responsible for the creation of all species, no? In which case, that creator is God lol.

The Wright brothers made the first flight ever in 1903, and 66 years later, man landed on the moon.

When I look at the big picture, I see a Financial System that is a literal house of cards.  Everything is leveraged against everything else.  And the one thing that keeps it all going is the Military Industrial Complex.  That's the bad feeling I have.  I don't think there are any Aliens.  I think we are all being had by our own governments.  Our governments are the Alien in the living room.

Well, Joc, it is hard for me to walk that line because I believe that UFO's go back before man could fly.
