Inside the town that banned kids from having mobile phones – the results were astounding

IT is one of the toughest decisions faced by parents – when to give in to their younger children’s constant demands for a smartphone.

Startling recent figures from communications regulator Ofcom show that 20 per cent of kids have a smartphone by the age of three, and that rises to 55 per cent between the ages of eight to 11.

But the residents of one seaside town in Ireland have decided they do not want their little ones to spend their most formative years peering into a tiny LCD screen.

The entire parent population of Greystones in County Wicklow got together to agree not to buy smartphones for their kids until they were in secondary school.

Technological innovations that enhance and enable communication.

While social psychology hasn`t caught up to prevent the negative side of groups of people.

One thing I saw bandied around is that by using tech with children to keep them occupied we’re killing off boredom which inevitably leads to imagination, in effect by not leaving your kid to be bored while you’re doing the shopping and telling them to come up with a story in their head to entertain themselves we’re creating people who do not cope well without stimulation and may be affecting the next generation of creatives.

"the results were astounding" says an article that mentions no results lol.

Not really any data here. Parents who did it think they made the right decision, like of course they do, most parents believe the way they are raising their kids is the correct. A bit of confirmation bias.

It would be interesting to see this is a study with varies valid tools and measurements.

And even after that there is the potential cofounder factor that parents willing to do these may already be more involved in their children's life than other parents.
