US man arrested after trying to 'run across ocean' in hamster wheel

A US man has been arrested after attempting to "run to London" through the Atlantic Ocean in a homemade floating hamster wheel.

The 44-year-old man from Florida was intercepted by the US Coast Guard about 100km from Tybee Island, in the US state of Georgia, on August 26.

Reza Baluchi has tried to complete three similar voyages before, all of which were intercepted by the Coast Guard.

Now that's optimistic.......

I thought I recognised this, he's done it before to raise money for charity.

I think they need to spend a few weeks following him with a boat in case a problem arises and let him go for it.

I would also impose a test of concept on him first on a smaller scale. Let him do the English Channel, then Florida to Cuba, and if all goes well let him go for the big one.

Did this guy even think about how long the sailing ships took to go from England to North America?

Contempt from the predictable sources, who probably could just float to London. Hopefully this guy finds a way to just get permission, maybe say the words "climate" and "change" in the same sentence, or something about Ukraine: he'd be drowning in money, not the Atlantic Ocean!

What if sharks will get tangled in his ''hamster wheel" contraption?... Not good...

The Coast Guard already has enough idiots they have to deal with on a daily basis. Now they’re having to engage with super-idiots.

Why did they arrest him? I didn't think it was illegal to be an idiot.

I'd say likely to curb a rescue mission. They cost a lot.

I reckon he should put rockets on the wheel like the Dambusters did. They wouldn't catch him then ...

So, what the heck would he do in high seas or a hurricane? What about fresh water?

And I hope he likes fish meals for the 27 years it would take him to battle through the journey.

One of the charges is obstruction of boarding. He falsely claimed he had a bomb on board to keep them away, then refused to leave his craft for three days.

Not to mention being a hazard to all the local maritime traffic.

A lot of vessel safety laws. Endangering shipping. Saying he had a bomb on board like @Antigonos said.

Good question.  Is he going to poop in the hamster wheel?  It seems like that could get really messy.
