Ukraine war: US to give Kyiv long-range ATACMS missiles - media reports

Still Waters

Recommended Posts

US President Joe Biden plans to give Ukraine advanced long-range missiles to help Kyiv with its ongoing counter-offensive, US media report.

They quote US officials familiar with the issue as saying Ukraine will get some ATACMS missiles with a range of up to 190 miles (300km).

This would enable Kyiv to hit Russian targets deep behind the front line.

They likely will be in possession of these munitions rather quickly. Depending on what specific munitions they get, it will definitely change things favorably on the battlefield for Ukraine.

The reports I've seen are that the total number will be somewhat limited and almost entirely the cluster munitions type rather than the more effective "unitary" warhead.  Still, if the HIMARS can be staged close enough in the south, they could strike nearly everything in Crimea.  Sevastopol would no longer be easily defended.

Hi And Then

Yes the cluster head will restrict how it is used but will still be effective in combat. I expect the plan too send them without cluster heads will change in the new year. I don't think Germany is goung to send cluster heads on their missiles and will likely wait to see how the American missiles are used before sending any of theirs.

DoD has stated they would release a mixture of range and munition type. Nothing the Russians maintain either structures, equipment or massed troops will be safe.

What is certain is the Russians better be drilling their best IDF actions immediately. It's going to be raining on them very soon.
