Authorities euthanized a 13ft alligator with human remains in its mouth after the animal turned up on Friday afternoon in a canal in Largo, Florida.

The Pinellas county sheriff’s office said in a news release that the male alligator measured 13ft 8.5in and was “humanely” killed after being removed from the water. The sheriff’s dive team recovered the human remains from the waterway.

Deputies stopped short of saying whether investigators believed the alligator had killed the person whose remains were in the animal’s mouth.

Police have identified a woman whose remains were found in the mouth of a 13ft alligator in Florida.

The body of 41-year-old Sabrina Peckham was pulled from a canal in Largo, about 20 miles west of Tampa, after a witness spotted her in the alligator's mouth, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.

The animal was "humanely killed", the sheriff's office said, and the coroner's office will perform a post-mortem examination to determine the official cause of death, but it is suspected Ms Peckham was killed by the alligator.

Why does it have to say “humanely,” it was eating one of our people? Can’t we pull its tail at least?

Likely because these days there are millions who'd read this story and be more concerned about the gator's suffering than the woman's.  What a horrible way to die.

The alligator has a small, primitive reptilian brain and doesn't have the capacity to understand the concept of cruelty. What's you excuse?

Considering the last prayer Jesus Christ spoke on Earth contradicts your argument, I don’t need one; but let’s be clear, you thought I was advocating cruelty?
