Tree rings reveal a new kind of earthquake threat to the Pacific Northwest

The findings from new research, led by University of Arizona dendrochronologist Bryan Black, could have implications for seismic preparedness measures in the region.

Quote

In February, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake shook the Turkey-Syria border, followed by one nearly as large nine hours later. Shallow faults less than 18 miles beneath the surface buckled and ruptured, causing violent focused quakes that leveled thousands of buildings and killed tens of thousands.

Similar shallow faults ruptured about 1,000 years ago in the Puget Lowlands in western Washington, according to new University of Arizona-led research. Tree rings helped pinpoint that the seismic event occurred in late A.D. 923 or early 924. Their findings mean that a repeat event has the potential to again shake the region that is now home to over 4 million people, including Seattle, Tacoma and Olympia. The results were published in the journal Science Advances.

We are bombarded by information about this kind of thing here.  I can't comprehend living on my states Pacific Coast.  Beautiful place but when you know what has happened there historically it's a bit terrifying.

My wife attended a medical conference in Portland in the late 90s and I got to go along.  I fell in love with the city and with the area around Crater Lake and the coast at Astoria.  I assume Washington is roughly the same but living on a fault line would be too much to pay for the beauty.  Down here, the wind and water can bring catastrophe in any given season but at least the ground doesn't move under our buildings.  :(

I've only been in two quakes that I felt.  It's unnerving for sure.  The first one I was a teenager and had just started smoking pot and thought I was hallucinating

Then just think about knock on effects. Those quakes could trigger landslides, damming up rivers, those natural dams then catastrophically fail, causing massive floods downstream...

Active tectonics is interesting, but no joke to live in.

I was living there when the 6.7 magnitude Earthquake hit the state, I will never forget that day. I was at work on FT. Lewis and then all of a sudden it sounded and felt like a freight train was coming through the second floor of the building where my office was located. I got the hell out of that build as fast as I could!

I had earthquake insurance on my rental properties and my home, so I dodged a bullet because when all was said and done there was approximately $23,000 worth of damage done that day!!!
