Congress races against time to avert a shutdown in 3 days, facing bleak prospects

Congress is hurtling toward a government shutdown, with money set to run out in a little more than two days and no sign of a short-term funding deal between the Republican-led House and Democratic-controlled Senate. With time running short, the two chambers are moving in different directions and remain far from converging on a path to resolve their disputes.

Meanwhile, Speaker Kevin McCarthy said he plans to bring a short-term funding bill to the floor on Friday, ahead of the 11:59 p.m. Saturday deadline, but the conservative package calls for steep spending cuts and a border and immigration measure that would be dead on arrival in the upper chamber.

President Joe Biden endorsed the Senate bill, telling McCarthy to honor the budget deal the two men reached earlier this year, which McCarthy has since sought to renege on under pressure from GOP hard-liners who insist on steeper spending cuts.

I think it will probably shut down.  Republicans can't broker a deal among themselves let alone with the Democrats.  There is also the deal that was made earlier this year which would be broken showing America that Republicans cannot be trusted to honor their word. So Democrats are fine with letting them do it for political capital.

I also think the Shut Down will actually happen this time, for how long will it last is my only question at this point. SO - Let the finger pointing begin!!!!

The good news is I get paid Friday.  Hopefully it doesn't last more than 2 weeks.

I doubt any shut down would last for long.  They can't take the chance that 95% of America would notice nothing unusual when the government isn't actively working.

That's why when Obama was in they purposely shut down things like Federal parks to try to make it painful.  When people realize we can live and function on 20% of the government, it is hard to justify it's current size.

Democrats will try to inflict as much pain as possible to the everyday people while continuing to fund illegals and Ukraine.  So grandma won't get her social security check because of the "shut down", yet they will still be sending billions to Ukraine, giving illegals shelter, etc.  Just watch.

Purposely?  They aren't essential workers.  Why would they work for free?

Social Security isn't affected by the shutdown. It isn't an appropriated program.

VA benefits either.  But Active Duty military pay is affected.

Just a reminder to the good people of America. Neither side is innocent in this nonsense. Both parties have created this mess. Keep that in mind when you want to have a political argument. This is just another symptom of the broken state of US politics.

The country deserves better leadership across the board.

That would be desirable but in reality, we get the government we deserve.

We should really just remove the ability for there to be a shut down. Most countries don't have to deal with this.

When a bill is passed (which requires magically going through all 3 branches of government) then it was agreed to be paid for.

We also can't just not pay people.

The funding nonsense every year is moronic.

This is your brain on MAGA folks. Trumpism really is like an abusive relationship for it's followers.

Republicans can't even come up with a deal amongst themselves and our shutting down the government over funding bipartisan bills that were passed prior to 2022.

But it's the democrats who are to blame for their problems . It really sounds like it's the MAGA element that's causing the problem.

I hope Biden reminds the public every day who is responsible for the shutdown. Name every one of these sleaze balls, and make them own it.

Someone who's trying to seem more important than he is.  His vote has nothing to do with the far-right nutjobs in the house that haven't even actually said what they want...besides chaos.
