US military receives laser air defense weapons

The U.S. Army has received the first four cutting-edge Directed Energy Maneuver-Short Range Air Defense, or DE M-SHORAD, prototype systems.

According to a recent Army press release, the 4th Battalion, 60th Air Defense Artillery Regiment at Fort Sill, has received the platoon of a new 50-kilowatt class laser weapon system on a Stryker vehicle.

The new laser air defense weapon system does not pull a trailer nor have a dedicated support vehicle. Everything needed is mounted on the one Stryker chassis, which gives it an agility advantage over older systems. Another key component of DE M-SHORAD is that it is more cost-effective than firing multiple high-dollar missiles at low-value targets.

In March 2023 at Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona, crews from 4-60th ADAR and the DE M-SHORAD prototype team came together to conduct a highly successful capability demonstration during a Live Fire Exercise. The event showcased the remarkable potential of these prototypes and left a lasting impression on participants and viewers.

Yea, that would be really cool. But, the fact that they are fielding these weapons platforms says it all, THEY WORK!!!!!

It's amazing how far we have come, it's just amazing!!!!!!! Next, our Navy and Airforce will be using at some point missiles will be considered relics of the past!:tu:

Hi Grim

I have no doubt they work and war will change again.

Incredible stuff.  How resourceful we can be.

It will be more incredible if we ever arrive at a point in our development when we don't need to use them for violence.

FFS we have just seen the USA deploy directed energy beam weapons for battlefield use as point defense.  This is big news !  This is a weapon system that can pretty much hit anything incoming very cheaply.  It can knock out missiles and drones for the one low price.  The USA has just changed the face of warfare again.

Your exactly right, and most people who may read or hear about this new technology will understand what you have written above.

Oh and by the way, this is only the beginning!:D

I am also waiting, but it important to remember this wheel-based version can also be used against ground based targets.:)

But can they change votes on a Dominion machine?  If not, Israel is lightyears ahead of us.

Tell me you're insipid without saying it in those words...

There’s an Aussie firm that’s been developing just that.
it looks like a shoulder fired missile system.

I think the Navy is already testing a shipboard 150kw version, do you know?  Bigger lasers require more power, a ship with nuclear reactors, like an aircraft is a good match for lasers powerful enough to take out hypersonic missiles.

Tate 6, I am uncertain if the Navy has begun ship board testing yet, but they’re in a system in development along with a ship board Rail Gun. What most people don’t realize about this new Air Defense Laser about this Is the fact that can also be used as ground based weapon system. This is possible because it is mounted on a wheeled vehicle platform, so it can also be used against ground troops, fixed fortifications, to clear mine fields and many other applications.

The vehicle platform is a version of the Striker Air Defense Vehicle and which is smaller than our Nations current fighter aircraft. In the very near future these weapons systems will also be placed upon Combat Fighter Aircraft like the F-35, which will be a totally ground breaking application. No, other country is close to making weapons platforms like these, and I bet the Chinese and Russian Militaries are crapping their pants with the release of this information!:tsu:

US Navy Test-Fires ‘Most Potent’ Laser Weapon System

Looks like it is in sea trials.  Not a weapons guy myself, but I wonder if one reason we don't panic about hypersonic missiles is that a laser powerful enough could burn one in flight.  Speed of light does beat 4x speed of sound if the power concentration is enough to burn a hole in its heat shield.   Need a lot of focused power in a few milliseconds, that's why I think 150kw is being tested shipboard.

Army Demonstration Advances Directed Energy System.

LAS CRUCES, N.M., May 25, 2022 — With an advancement to the U.S. Army’s Directed Energy Maneuver-Short Range Air Defense (DE M-SHORAD) system, a team led by Raytheon Intelligence and Space, and by Kord, a subsidiary of KBR, defeated multiple 60-mm mortar rounds with a 50-kW-class high-energy laser integrated on a Stryker combat vehicle. The demonstration spanned four weeks of continuous live-fire exercises, in which the directed energy weapon system acquired, tracked, targeted, and defeated the mortars and accomplished tests simulating real-world scenarios.

Soldiers in the field face increasingly complex threats, and our combat-proven sensors, software, and lasers are ready to give them a new level of protection,” said Annabel Flores, president of Electronic Warfare Systems for Raytheon Intelligence and Space. “The Army gave us our toughest challenge yet — countering rockets, artillery, and mortars — and we took an essential step on the path to providing the maneuverable, short-range air defense soldiers need.”

Well, we are also building hypersonic missiles, but I believe the point you made above is certainly very very valid!
