The Cost of Illegal Immigrants

The number of illegal immigrants in the United States has reached 11 million, most of them coming from Mexico, according to a report released Monday by the Pew Hispanic Center. But new statistics and growing concern that our porous southern border invites terrorists into this country may not spark the White House into action.

In fact, Mexico President Vicente Fox warned that no major announcement on immigration would result from today's summit in Texas with President Bush and Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin. One would expect more from Bush, who governed the state with the second largest illegal immigrant population.

About 6 million illegals in the United States are Mexican. Not all of them stay close to the border. New Jersey, with 350,000 undocumented immigrants, according to the Pew researchers, ranks among the top eight states in that category. California is number one, with 2.4 million illegals, followed by Texas, Florida, New York, Arizona, Illinois, New Jersey and North Carolina.

The Department of Homeland Security has an illegal immigrant category it calls "other than Mexicans," or OTMs. The Christian Science Monitor reported Tuesday that most of the 44,000 OTMs allowed in the United States while awaiting hearings last year were released on their own recognizance.

Most of the non-Mexican illegals come from other Latin and Central American countries. But the route they chose could be easily followed by others who traveled to Mexico simply to cross its borders.

Both 9/11 and Oklahoma City have taught Americans that it only takes a handful of terrorists to fashion a tragedy of epic proportions. Dozens of terrorists could slip through the Mexican border's holes.

But it's not just the fear of terrorism that demands attention to the immigration issue. The Pew report says a sixth of the illegal immigrants in this country are under age 18. Local schools and health-care systems can expect to see many of these children, as well as their estimated 3 million sisters and brothers who were born in this country and are U.S. citizens.

Bush proposed a "guest worker" program for illegal immigrants last year, but has not pushed the idea with Congress. He and Fox need to have more than a polite conversation about the issue. The number of Mexican-born U.S. residents has grown from 760,000 to more than 11 million since 1970. Each year, a half-million Mexicans move to the United States, about 80 percent of them illegally. They work here, go to school here, and they can't be ignored.

I find this sickening. Citizens of this country are paying because of some idiots that think it is ok to break laws. I DON'T care if they are hardworking, poor, or looking for a better life. They are here illegally and should be delt with severely. America has to make a statement that it is NOT ok for them to come here illegally.

The ones that come here to take jobs that arent well paid ,because people in this country dont want them,well if Blair was going to be tough on Brittish dole cheats he could stop their benifit and make them take one of these poor paid jobs and the market would not be there for these border raiders and we would save billions on Social Security Benefits

So as i have said i do think we need people from abroad to fill the job market ,but at what cost ?Blair hasalready said that he is going to cut Social security by half,that is take 2 million people on benefits and put them back to work,where will they find the work if it is all taken by these people who would work for anything

I have to put in my word......

I live in Arizona, only three hours away from Mexico. But fortunately I don't have to spend that much time in taking a trip. I can just look out the window of almost any building and see mexican work crews standing in the streets, hanging out on the corners, bothering businesses, 17 people to a house Mexican flags everywhere. so many of one race to job (quota), spanish street signs and most of all... Hundreds of multi-colored late model chevies with hydraulics blasting the ey-ey-ey music.

Hey, this if firetrucking America dammit. illegal immigration worked when no one else lived here, because it wasn't illegal then, it was just immigration. But not anymore.

Speak English and wait in line like the rest of the civilized world does and did.

Or get the hell out.

i agree totally, when tony blair was at uni studying to be a politian he wasnt having to anticipate paying back his student loan unlike me and tens of thousands of others . he has made it economically undesirable for the working class to consider studying for years to become doctors etc.

anyway warden, i dont wish to argue over this subject, as i believe each case should be anaylzed individually, a long process, yes, but it is how they are supposedly deciding who are vaild asylum seekers at the moment.

Yeah, isn't that grand? They flee their home country, come to America illegally to steal from us and yet they will fly the Mexican flag... They also bring a lot of crime with them. They shouldn't be here and should be punished to the full extent of the law to make a nice example to the rest of those criminals. Maybe even change some laws to make punishments a lot worse to make them stop and think before crossing onto America soil. To me all illegal immigrants are terrorists - They steal jobs, money from the goverment, and cause a lot of problems just being there. As a terrorist they should be treated as a terrorist.

As for the Native Americans, look at all the countries in the WORLD that have been taken over due to war and killing. They were the weak ones so they LOST! I mean jeez... get over it. As for their casinos, they have it very nice, along with their hunting rights. Did you know in Wisconsin a Native America can spear as many walleye as he wants in a day? But I as a white man, can only take the legal limit of 5 (about average for all lakes, some lakes only allow 1 or 2) and they have to be above 15 inches in length.

well assuming you want to close the borders entirely, i disagree with sending people back to their home country, when they are likely to be victims of torture or barbaric deaths for the opinions they hold regarding the strict regimes they are living by.

Actuality its because the UK gives welfare to anyone, and will give them housing at the expense of our own homeless and doesn deport you if you manage to avoid authorities for long enough. Other EU members aren't this stupid and don't do all that.

And there are plenty who con't speak the language and don't intend to, lets remember 6% of the Netherlands population is Arab and can't speek a word of Dutch, don't intent to learn Dutch, don't even know the name of the country in Dutch.

Another thing, arn't Mexicans white. Their decended from southern Europeans (Spanish and Portugese), while the north Americans from the North Europeans (Scottish and Irish).

Although our skin tones are slightly different (northerns tend to be plaler, and Medeterian races tend to look like they have a periminant tan...which given their climate they propable do), southern and nothern Europeans are still all Caucasian, so wouldn't the same be true of former colonies also?

1000 people patroling the border for a straight month with binocluars, jeeps and helicopters tracking and reporting to Border Patrol. Illegal immigration is ruining the southwest and spreading into the rest of the US. The cost of is immense in $$. The border should be sealed allowing only legal immigration. Its unfair for the mexicans to jump in front of the line. Others wait for years to immigrate here legally. They dont have some god given right to come as they please using hospitals, schools, jails at our taxpayer cost. Millions cross every year. Our hospitals are closing weekely as they go BK from the costs, our jails are overcrowded. What a load of BS. We should put the national guard on the border to stop illegals, drug running, and arms smuggling cold. Fox is a freaking hippocrit. You should see how Mexico deals with illegals from south america trying to cross into mexico illegally. But yet they encourage mexicans to come here.. It's coming to an end as political, economic and civillian pressure is building to a head.
