The United States military has deployed a nuclear-powered submarine to the Middle East

And?

All subs are nuclear powered. It doesn't mean it's going to spit nukes.

That's there just to watch things. No worry.

The USN increased their sub patrols on the East Coast too. Which is why we have all these dead whales washing up.

I wonder if the subs sonar has an effect on the whales' echo location.

It most certainly does. It would be like hitting you with one of those crowd dispersion noise weapons.

How can it be a show of deterence? It a sub, it's designed to be not seen. I seriously doubt that the sub is going to cruise up, and down the coast with the Conning tower sticking out so that anybody with missiles can take pot shots at it.

Easily enough.  Apparently it was an Ohio class sub, those that can carry enough nuclear warheads to obliterate a medium sized country. The announcement was made that it was on station in  the Med so it was not a secret.  One source I read said it was carrying Tomahawk  cruise missiles rather than nuclear warheads.   A cruise missile is enough to get somebody's attention, but not enough to cause immediate escalation.  Militaries use them frequently enough to be commonplace.  We have not yet responded vigorously  to Iran backed Hezbollah  attacks on our area bases.  Maybe we are getting ready to do a bit more if a base gets attacked again.  JMO. Certainly we did not sneak into the area, so the press releases may have been a warning to the parties, F around and find out.

An Ohio class can carry 154 cruise missiles.

from the OP link:

Ohio-class submarines can carry nuclear ballistic missiles as well as cruise missiles.
It is not immediately clear if the submarine now operating near Israel is carrying nuclear ballistic missiles.

Fair bet they won't be firing nuke missiles any time too soon.

US military strikes facility in Syria in response to attacks on troops

U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria have been attacked at least 42 times since Oct. 17 — including two in the last 24 hours — with one-way drones and rockets. At least 46 service members have been injured in these assaults, which Defense officials have claimed that Iran is responsible for.

But if we did that, then how would they be able to shoot our troops?  If they don't shoot our troops, how can we be outraged? <sarcasm>

We won the war in Iraq when Saddam Hussein  invaded  Kuwait. so we left some our troops.

I remember that war.  I fought in it back in 1990.  Has it been 33 years already?  Hah, I feel old.

You're not wrong.  We have been over there, Syria, Afghanistan, etc. for decades now.

US strikes on Iranian proxies trigger fear of wider Middle East war:(

U.S. Carries Out Another Round of Airstrikes on Targets Tied to Iran

Airstrikes hit two facilities in eastern Syria, most likely killing or injuring Iran-backed militia personnel. The United States has blamed such groups for recent attacks against its troops.
