Doug I'm not looking forward to the negative Temps. I've read the Little House on the Prairie books to my kids and it sounds miserable in the deep winter. Though I think much of that "12 feet of snow" in the books may have been a bit exaggerated. 14 hours ago, Myles said: I think you would make it acceptable. Not too bad. Or... are you talking about a BF? 😄

Even though "Little House on the Prairie" is fictionalized, it is a mostly-accurate description of weather at that time. Oklahoma had some 10-foot drifts in 1886. Cattle by the tens of thousands died because they couldn't break through the hard-crusted snow to reach grass. We lost 7000 head in the Cherokee Strip alone. In Kansas, the old soddies were just giving way to clapboard houses. The clapboard ones didn't insulate as well - 109 people froze to death in their houses. A train in western Kansas got stuck in the snow. Heat from the engine and heating stoves melted snow which ran down onto the tracks and froze. In the morning, they couldn't break it loose. An 11-engine rescue train from Kansas City made it to Salina where it got stuck in the snow, too. In Wyoming, a stage-coach made a trip on top of the snow without leaving tracks. The storm reached all the way to the east coast. Newport Harbor froze over for the only time in recorded history. Washington DC reported 20 below. Ranchers who were millionaires in 1885 collected bones to sell for fertilizer in 1886. Remember the movie "Monte Walsh?" It's about the spring of 1886. You wonder where Grandpa got his weather stories? They weren't just stories. It really happened. Doug

I'm told you can get excellent Mexican cuisine in Bismarck. Texas drillers move up there and bring their wives. The wives have nothing to do, so start Mexican restaurants. The only exception to the rule: never buy Mexican food north of the Red River. Doug
