BBC presenter says 'too many white colleagues' affects his mental health

BBC Radio 5 Live presenter Nihal Arthanayake says an overwhemlingly "white" work force has an impact on his mental health.

Speaking to a journalism diversity conference on Wednesday, he said there are no Muslim workers involved in the "senior editorial process" at Radio 5 Live. He said: "It's really affecting me that I walk in and all I see is white people."

He claims his colleagues' response when he revealed this was to reply defensively and say they were not being racist. But he says that this was missing the point, reports The Telegraph.

Arthanayake said others found they had to be a certain type of person to progress at the BBC. He said the "hardest thing" is to walk into a room at work and see "nobody looks like you".

The majority of people in this country are not Muslims.   And most of the rest couldn't give a toss what their manager's religion is, especially in a job where their religion has no relevance whatsoever.

Religion is what you do at home.  Not at work.  Grow up snowflake.

There he stood in the corner, abandoned by women and men, muttering over and over, I will never eat onions again.

The first obvious question for me is if this was me addressing a room full of people telling them that when I walk into room full of black work colleagues it affects my mental health because I don't see any white people....how long would I keep my job for?

What makes him think none of them being white means none of them are Muslim?

Fortunately, they all have one easy answer - the guy is too fragile to allowed outside the home without close monitoring ;)

I think technically all his colleagues could resign and go to tribunals over that for racism towards white people if they argue they each took offence to his comments.

The easiest answer for Nihal is to move to somewhere where he’ll feel more comfortable

It sounds to me like if this guy is uncomfortable with white folk, then that's a problem he needs to work on.

Imagine if a white bloke said this, he would be branded a far right white supremacist with pretentions of creating a New British Empire.. :D

Sadly the fact that a brown man can be openly racist towards white people and be backed by the BBC isn't shocking its predictable.

You and @Eldorado should read the article. It was the BBC he was complaining about. Quote: The BBC has not commented on Arthanayake's claims.

It's your Brexit points-based immigration policy that is responsible for the 2 million increase in long-term immigrants from 'the rest of the world' that you value more than our own continent, Europe. You won, get over it:

In which case the BBC will probably fire him then right, because they wouldn't accept such racist comments from a white employee about black colleagues would they.

What the BBC should be doing is making a psychological assessment available for poor tormented Nihal

A few more years of the Brexit points-based immigrations system and the whole country will be run by Muslims - just look at the present government, city mayors, and this year we have had the second highest number of small boats.

I don't actually know any Brexit voters (I think they are ashamed to admit they voted Leave), but if I met one, I would ask them why they hate us Europeans and love people from other cultures so much. Do you know why?

Personally, I love our European culture- Greek temples, Italian cathedrals, Spanish tavernas- but Brexiters seem to prefer mosques. I just don't know why. Half a million immigrants per year forecast for the next 2 or 3 years, just because we dislike European seasonal workers.
