pellinore Posted December 6, 2023 #1 Share Posted December 6, 2023 (edited) Wage rises can't keep pace, so wage increases just fuel inflation instead of improving our standard of living. Well done, Brexiters, you are bringing our once great country to its knees! Britain is the only rich economy where food prices are still rising by more than 10pc, according to data that highlights the challenge facing the Bank of England as it battles to bring down inflation. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) said while UK food price inflation eased in October, price rises remain in double digits in just three other countries. Food inflation across the 38 nations it monitors slowed to 7.4pc in October, down from 8.1pc in September. This means the UK is the only country in the G7 rich club of nations where food prices are still rising by more than 10pc. Only Turkey, Iceland and Colombia have higher inflation rates in the wider OECD. Eldorado Posted December 6, 2023 #2 Share Posted December 6, 2023 Teenagers in the UK are skipping more meals because of poverty than in many other Western European countries, a survey suggests. "Many parts of the world are experiencing a food crisis, with families struggling to put food on the table," the Pisa report says. "Millions of students, including from some of the richest countries, are often struggling to get fed." In Portugal, Finland and the Netherlands less than 3% of teenagers told the survey they had skipped at least one meal a week because of a lack of money, over the previous 30 days. But this rose to: 11% in the UK and Lithuania 13% in the US 19% in Turkey https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-67619470 1
+susieice Posted December 6, 2023 #3 Share Posted December 6, 2023 I was just going to say, the UK is far from alone in facing rising food costs. Housing, utilities...the cost of living is going way up here in the US also. At least for a large percentage of the population.

You Remoaners are absolutely bloody relentless in your pointless crusade to blame absolutely everything negative on Brexit. So just out of curiosity, and also to shut you whinging Remoaning little crybabies up about Brexit being the cause of food price increases, I've just done a price comparison for everyday grocery items on both the Tesco UK website and the Tesco Ireland website, and this is what I've found so far - (prices correct as of Wednesday 6th December 2023). . Tesco Large Free Range Eggs 6 Pack: UK = £1.85 (or €2.16). . Tesco Large Free Range Eggs 6 Pack: Ireland = €2.25 (or £1.93). So eggs are more expensive in Ireland (an EU country) than they are in the non-EU UK. How about potatoes then? . Tesco Maris Piper Potatoes 2Kg: UK = £1.36 (£0.68 per kg) - (or €1.59 / €0.79 per kg). . Tesco Maris Piper Potatoes 2Kg: Ireland = €3.89 (€1.94 per kg) - (or £3.33 / £1.66 per kg). Oh dear. Well it seems that potatoes are also more expensive in Ireland (an EU country) than they are in the non-EU UK as well. 🤦 What about Broccoli & Cauliflower then? Surely broccoli & Cauliflower is cheaper in an EU country..... . Tesco Broccoli & Cauliflower Floret Mix 900G: UK = £1.05 (or €1.23). . Tesco Broccoli & Cauliflower Floret Mix 900G: Ireland = €1.50 (or £1.28). .... errrm, nope.!! How about meats then? Well let's see shall we. . Tesco Lean Beef Steak Mince 500G: UK = £3.49 (£6.98 per kg) - (or €4.08 / €8.15 per kg). . Tesco Irish Lean Beef Steak Mince 470G: Ireland = €4.00 (€8.51 per kg) - (or £3.43 / £7.29 per kg). Well it seems minced beef is certainly cheaper per kg in the non-EU UK than it is in EU Ireland. How about chicken then. Surely that's got to be cheaper in the EU, surely. No it isn't. . Tesco Room To Roam British Chicken Breast Fillets 650G: UK = £7.50 (£11.54 per kg) - (or €8.76 / €13.47 per kg). . Tesco Free Range Irish Chicken Breast Fillets 454G: Ireland = €7.99 (€17.60 per kg) - (or £6.84 / £15.08 per kg). Wow. So that's a massive £3.54 per kg saving in non-EU UK than it is in EU Ireland. 😂😂😂 Whilst this is by no means an extensive list, I have tried to compare like for like items wherever possible, as Tesco UK and Tesco Ireland have a lot of brands specific to one or the other country, but it does show that from the limited research I've done so far, grocery items in a post-Brexit UK are actually cheaper than they are in Ireland (an EU country), so is that down to Brexit then. 🤔 Edited December 6, 2023 by Destination Unknown

You also have literally no idea of what you are talking about. Interest rates are used to regulate demand in an economy and the EU sets a single interest rate for its entire block which is currently at 4%. That is really bad. That means countries which need a lower or higher interest rate (cough, thats all of them) dont get the rate that they need damaging their economies. If we were in the EU right and taking into account our own economic need being including in the assessment we might find the EU interest rate would be 4.25%. Our actual current rate of interest is 5.25% and inflation is 4.6%. Drop that interest rate by a percent and that 4.6% goes up by a couple of percent. So in effect, being in the EU right now would cause even higher food inflation in the UK. Your lets tare down Britain crusade needs to stop. If you really feel that strongly against us then what are you doing living here? Go and live in the EU, you`ll be far happier than you are now. You can still even post on UM!
