Fuming over setback to casino smoking ban, workers light up in New Jersey

Seven members of the union, which represents dealers at three casinos in Atlantic City, began smoking in the meeting hall of the State House Annex, where, like virtually all other workplaces in New Jersey, smoking is prohibited.

“We're not allowed to smoke in your workplace, but you're allowed to smoke in ours,” Daniel Vicente, a regional director of the union, told lawmakers through a cloud of exhaled smoke.

He and the others were soon escorted from the hearing room by State Police, and released without charges.

“They say it's OK for secondhand smoke to be blown in our faces all day, every day,” Vicente said afterward. “We wanted to know if it's OK if we did that in their workplace. They said it was inappropriate and not allowed here."

I wonder why they're under the delusion that they are being compelled to stay in the job?

I am surprised that this is still an issue, in this day and age everyone knows the danger of smoking and second hand smoke. I still smoke occasionally but I don’t smoke in my home or where it bothers others.

Cigar bars have exhaust systems that you can't see or hear. The ones around here stay packed and you can barely tell anyone is smoking at all.

This incident demonstrates a significant protest by union members against the exception allowing smoking in the casino, contrasting it with the strict no-smoking policy in almost all other workplaces.

That's just it now isn't it, most clubs here are non smoking and it's a must if I work there, years back one club wanted my show so my night was made smoke free, other clubs that liked smoking I've passed up, no big deal

Hi Bats

There are no bars or clubs where there is smoking for many years now some many of them built patio or deck areas with speakers outside so we could smoke and drink out there and they had a roof and heaters. When I moved here it's totally different and even the patio is non-smoking which is stupid as you have to stand on the sidewalk without you beer leaning against the railing so the smoke still goes into the patio.

Truth is where I spin we have both a big patio and front area and very few people smoke tobacco, vapes are popular and a heck of a lot of people have weed cards,

I'm 59 doing this since early 80s not a hobbyist bedroom DJ this along with club opps and bands was my career, I retired years back but came back out and I'm lucky enough to hold down a two night resident, i hope to have a few more years left to do it.
