pellinore Posted January 15 #1 Share Posted January 15 (edited) The Tories claim their Rwanda Plan is a deterrent. It will certainly deter people from voting for them in the GE later this year. Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has been unable to explain why the UK has accepted asylum seekers from Rwanda if the country is deemed safe by the Government. i revealed on Monday that six people from Rwanda have been granted asylum in Britain since the Government signed its deportation deal with the country in 2022. ......... It means more asylum seekers have arrived in Britain from Rwanda than vice versa since the agreement was signed, which still stands at zero. Shapps can’t explain why Rwandans being given asylum in UK if country is ‘safe’ (msn.com) Edited January 15 by pellinore

I swear they're actually trying to lose the election at this point.
itsnotoutthere Posted January 16 #3 Share Posted January 16 (edited) Can anybody explain why any of them are given asylum when they've arrived from the safe country of France? (Italy & Spain) And what's going down in Albania & Romania that we give them asylum also? Why can't we at least all just be honest and call them what they really are, economic migrants. You can't "return" people to France unless you have a returns agreement. What are you going to do, fly them over France and throw them off over the beaches? We need closer ties with Europe if we want to return people. 3. The people arriving in boats are a fraction of the numbers of legal immigrants welcomed because of Brexit- 750,000 last year. And deporting 200 per year to Rwanda will make no dent in the numbers anyway.

It does matter where they travel from, they are not being persecuted in France or Italy so they are not eligible for asylum in the UK at that point. 2. There is already a returns agreement with Farnce. We are paying them £450M ish a year to patrol their borders better but bles them they are feckless. 3. 750,000 immigrants because of Brexit??? What are you talking about? You say we are better off being in EU but now saying 750,000 illegal immigrants a year disagree with you because they are trying to desperately get to the UK instead of the EU. At least they can read the room I guess.

International law makes no such stipulation. 2. We are prepared to pay everyone, including the Rwandans and Australians (the barges), to take over our responsibilities for controlling our borders. The government doesn't care, it is taxpayers' money not theirs. It doesn't work, we have to invest in the UK if we want robust borders (wait until the new import controls come in at the end of this month, another fiasco awaits us). 3. The 750k permanent immigrants per year are coming in to replace the seasonal and temporary EU workers our companies were able to recruit under FOM (Farage told people it was offensive to hear people speaking Polish in the UK). They are legal immigrants- get used to them, as there will be plenty more. Edited January 19 by pellinore

It's only France we need to taken their responsibility. 3. There won't be plenty more if the birders are secured at the Channel and the jobs are filled. I really am open to migration WHEN DONE LEGALLY.

We need a flexible immigration policy- like we used to have. We can't sustain 500,000 immigrants every year, which is what our point-based system legally allows.

The French are cheese munchers with hamsters for mothers and they smell of bilberries. 3. If immigrants come through legal channels only then the flow can be controlled. Contrary to popular belief, the UK is not a magnet for asylum seekers. In fact, it is probably their last choice. As the UK becomes poorer in relation to other European countries, it may go into reverse, as British people try to seek a new life in Poland, for example: There isn’t much direct evidence to suggest that the UK is disproportionately favoured by asylum seekers. The International Organisation for Migration carried out over 4,000 interviews with migrants earlier this year. It found that 6% of migrants “interviewed along the Central Mediterranean route” from North Africa to Italy said they intended to reach the UK. Of those travelling through Hungary and the Balkans, the UK wasn’t a popular enough destination to be singled out in the analysis, which says that most wanted to reach Germany. Why do migrants and asylum seekers want to come to the UK? - Full Fact Edited January 20 by pellinore

As fie the UK being poorer, nonsense. The longer term is v rosy, so long as we get well away from the EU cartel.
