Intuitive Machines: IM-1, Odysseus Moon Landing Attempt [updated - powered down for the lunar night]

Since the previous thread, following the development and launch of Odysseus, has grown rather long I have decided to start a dedicated thread for the landing attempt, which is just a few hours away.

If successful this will be the first US lunar landing since Apollo 17 in 1972.

It was a little iffy there for a bit but Odysseus made it! On the US east coast it was announced on our World News broadcast. Congratulations NASA and everyone who worked on this project.

Edit to add: @Waspie_Dwarf It's been a couple of weeks since you were injured during a storm you had in England. I hope all is well with you now.

@susieice Thank you.

It's been just over a month (21st January). Most of the cuts and bruises have gone now. My ribs are still a little sore and my right foot is still a little painful. Considering that it was a large tree that hit me (the stump is about 2 foot in diameter) I am very lucky, I was literally an inch away from losing my life, which would have been inconvenient because I would have missed this lunar landing.

  • The title was changed to Intuitive Machines: IM-1, Odysseus Moon Landing Attempt [updated - successful landing]

@Waspie_Dwarf I'm glad you are well on the mend. Take care of yourself as you're still sore.

Now I'm anxious to see the pictures being sent back. This was an NBC News report before the craft's condition was really known. If they find ice that is going to be quite an exciting confirmation.

Moon landing: 'Odysseus' touches down on lunar surface (nbcnews.com)

As it descended to the lunar surface, Odysseus targeted a landing site near a crater called Malapert A, close to the moon’s south pole. The moon's south polar region has long been tantalizing for scientists because water ice is thought to be relatively abundant in the region’s permanently shadowed craters.

I'm hoping that the EagleCam worked. This was to be ejected before landing so that it could film Odysseus as it touched down.
