Germany sidesteps EU and pushes for Bilateral US trade deal.

Germany goes it alone. EU, what EU.

How limited is limited ?

(Bloomberg) — German Economy Minister Robert Habeck spoke with US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo about intensifying cooperation on the mutual recognition of products with the aim of reaching a form of limited trade pact.

“A firm basis for a kind of mini free trade regarding technical products” is needed, Habeck said in Chicago during his last stop on a three-day trip to the US. “I have signaled this to Raimondo and we are both willing to work on it.”

The UK is already there.

UK, Texas sign trade agreement to strengthen bilateral ties.

"On 13 March, the UK formalised a trade agreement with Texas to enhance trade and investment connections with Texas, marked by the visit of Texas Governor Greg Abbott to London, as celebrated by Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch.

With its economy standing as the second-largest among US states, Texas boasted a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of £1.9 trillion in 2022, surpassing the economies of Italy and Canada. This positions the agreement as the most economically consequential trade agreement the UK has established with a US state thus far.

Wow.

I'm nearly ready to rejoin the EU now that we can trade with whomever we want, just need to retain our own currency and ignore the ECHR but I guess now you can make any rules to suit yourself, I reckon we are in the clear.

Just shows how stupid the UK was. We were the Big Cheese in the EU, now we have tied ourselves up in Brexit red tape and can't even enjoy the freedom they have to trade with the whole world.

It is not a trade deal. It is a Memorandum of Understanding. The US doesn't want a trade deal with the UK. MOUs will kick in if it ever does.

Besides that, the fact that Texas has a huge economy does not mean they will ever share it with the UK. I spent £20 in Tesco's today- so I am party to a multibillion company. I gave them £20; they gave me a chicken, a packet of carrots and an onion. I'm a partner of a £20 billion company, yay!

We weren't "the Big Cheese" in the EU at all pellinore.

In 2005 Tony Blair gave away some £7bn (€10bn) of "rebates" (UK taxpayers money, OUR money) to the EU in exchange for a "promise" from the rest of the EU that the 'Common Agricultural Policy' (CAP) would be reformed and that France would contribute (net) the same as the UK into the scheme. Nearly 20 years later and the CAP has still not been reformed, and the UK still contributed (net) nearly twice as much as France into the CAP - two countries with similarly sized economies - until the day we left. Many in the UK at the time were stunned at the stupidity of trusting the EU to honour their promises, and we have since been proven right in believing we had been lied to and cheated. 👇👇👇👇

In October 2014 the EU bullied Prime Minister David Cameron into paying an extra £1.7bn (€2.1bn) of UK taxpayers money (again, OUR money) because the UK's economy had outperformed those of other EU countries, and therefore decided to slap the UK with a penalty, which was then given away to those same underperforming countries - you know, the one that Cameron slammed as "immoral" and told us all he wasn't going to pay one single penny of it, but then did anyway, that one. 👇👇👇👇

In February 2016 David Cameron went to Brussels to try and secure "special status" for the UK within a "reformed" EU, he was laughed out of the door.

Does that sound to you like the UK was "the Big Cheese" in the European Union pellinore? 🤔

The very fact that a British Prime Minister feels he has to go cap in hand groveling to a bunch of unelected, unaccountable, out of touch bureaucrats based in Brussels to beg for powers that should naturally reside with any sovereign country simply highlights the inadequacies of the EU.

Meanwhile, in your beloved EU: "European Commission accused of ‘bankrolling dictators’ by MEPs after Tunisia deal"

The European Commission has been accused of “bankrolling dictators” by senior MEPs who have claimed that the €150m it gave to Tunisia last year in a migration and development deal has ended up directly in the president’s hands. 👇👇👇👇

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/mar/13/european-commission-accused-of-bankrolling-dictators-by-meps-after-tunisia-deal

The truth is pellinore, we have learnt that the EU is untrustworthy and incapable of reform by their previous actions. Understand what the EU was like when it started, what it is like now, and you'll surely know what it will be like in the future.

You have to be carful of breaching EU trademark regulations when mentioning Big Cheese, I would expect the French to own that brand and they will pursue their rights to all things cheesy in the courts. 😉

The UK are the pioneers and showed the EU that life exists very well outside if it. Germany should leave now that they have broken the laws. Or give Greece, Italy and Spain their currencies back.
