Grijalva and Legislators Urge Biden Administration to Cease Withholding Social Security Payments for Repayment of Defaulted Student Loans

Today, Representative Raúl Grijalva, alongside Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden, as well as Representatives Ayanna Pressley, Pramila Jayapal, and John Larson, has taken a significant step in advocating for the financial security of vulnerable Americans by calling for an end to the practice of offsetting Social Security benefits to pay off defaulted student loans.

This joint effort comes in response to the devastating impact of offsets under the Treasury Offset Program (TOP) on seniors and people with disabilities who rely solely on Social Security as their primary source of income.

The lawmakers express grave concerns about the disproportionate burden placed on older borrowers, many of whom are already struggling to make ends meet.

According to a 2016 Government Accountability Office report, Social Security offsets to recover defaulted student loan debt have pushed tens of thousands of senior Americans below the poverty line.

While Biden is forgiving student loans these people seem to have fallen through the cracks.

In my opinion ANY cuts or diversions of Social Security and Medicare should never be considered. What Biden is doing is totally wrong, along with the current cuts in these programs proposed by the RNC!!

Wow.  Just wow.  So people are making it all the way to Social Security age and still not able to pay off their student loans.  I didn't even know that they garnished Social Security to pay off the loans.

Yeah, we should end that and forgive their loans.  The whole point of Social Security was a safety net for those that went through life and couldn't save enough to live off of before they turned elderly.  Removing that safety net because they have student debt seems counter-intuitive.

Not able? Or not willing? Just because someone still has a student debt doesn't mean they have that debt because they have been unfairly treated. If they chose not to pay back their student debt, then why should it be forgiven just because they spent their entire adult life dodging it?

Seriously, America needs to fix its education system. Make university affordable, get rid of the Student Loan programs altogether, what they have right now just isn't working!

I certainly agree with you today in the United States it takes hundreds of thousands dollar to get a good education. Even the middle-class American's have some difficulty putting their children through college. I was lucky I never had that problem; my entire college education was paid for by the US Government except for books.
