State of emergency due to NUCLEAR CONTAMINATION is declared in Russian city

The Russian authorities have not explained what is causing the alarming radiation in the Khabarovsk specialised plant 'Radon', southeast Russia. A mystery radiation source was today 'removed and placed in a protective container' and 'transported to a radioactive waste storage facility'. Yet a state of emergency is to remain for at least three more days in the Industrialny district of the city, as law enforcement agencies examine the origin of the leak. A man wearing a nuclear protective mask is seen in darkness with a radiation reader that quickly rises as he walks over a 'waste dump'. His reader sounded an alarm at 0.45 microsieverts and the highest reading visible on screen is 5.99.Astonishingly, the potentially lethal radiation leak in Khabarovsk was known for around one week before action was taken on it and the public alerted.

And how many other leaks are going undetected?  Russia is a basket case.

That’s exactly what I was thinking, obviously the situation is dire and they can’t hide it or they would not have released this information. I suspect that in few days they will release more information and that they have an uncontainable leak. The leak must be big, because again they would not reported it if it were contained. The United States has air monitoring sensors Nationwide that will detect radiation and chemical agents. Also our military bases worldwide also have fixed sensors deployed to protect our soldiers. It’s very possible that if the leak is bad enough it could be detected in South Korea, so I think the Russians are trying to get out in front of situation before it blows up in their face.

The post above also answers your questions, but I think your right!

Radiation contamination usually affects the thyroid gland.

Potassium iodide is your best friend rather than speculating.

Russia back filled a whole lake because of radiation contamination and it's not known whether or not the contamination is making its way into the ground water. (of course it is)

At Chernobyl they flew helicopters over the burning reactor and attempted to smother the fire and limit the release of radioactive particles by dropping some 5000 tonnes of boron, dolomite, sand, clay, and lead directly into the burning reactor. Later they sealed the entire reactor by pouring a special mixture of concrete directly on top the materials. This process was repeated over a period of months until the dose rate dropped to negligible levels, however by then it was to little to late.

It depends uponthe type of radioactive particles released and how soon a person can be given Iodine tablets, preferably before exposure. But Iodine tablets do not provide protection for a person’s other vital organs and especially the brain they only prevent entry into one’s thyroid.

Isn't that region of Russia where they did most of their weapons manufacturing?  Maybe they had a storage facility that they allowed to decay without proper maintenance.

Yes it was but from the articles I've read the dumping was deliberate.

That's the thing about us Mexicanos is that we don't need a bar to have a good time or make friends.

But yeah man, I'd like to have a coffee with you, youre very intelligent and also very fair.

That would be really cool, except I don't know when I will return to the United States again.

Sincerely thank you very much for the offer, I appreciate it and your comments.:tu:
