UM-Bot Posted April 22 #1 Share Posted April 22 An eagle-eyed anomaly hunter had discovered what looked like a spire-like structure in a NASA photo of the Moon. https://www.unexplained-mysteries.com/news/376459/nasa-scientist-debunks-alien-spire-on-the-moon-conspiracy-theory
Popular Post Antigonos Posted April 22 Popular Post #2 Share Posted April 22 Richard Hoagland, of the Face on Mars fame, was making these claims of extraterrestrial ruins, like spires and glass structures, on the Moon back in the 80s.

My favorite ball of rubbish from Hoagland was when he started floating the idea that Phobos was an ancient alien spaceship. 7

I remember those stories and that name from when I was a kid, those tabloids near the checkout counter at grocery stores...my mom never would buy me one, said it was garbage and nonsense. I still too this day will never know the truth about Batboy! 😆 4 3

I heard him on Coast to Coast back in the days. 😄 I had to review the Wikipedia on him to refresh my memory. He has zero college education but in the 60s he kept getting nice gigs in science and was even the science advisor for CBS during the Moon landings. They couldn't find anyone more qualified? Then in the 80s he went "nonlinear" (engineering term for losing your mind) and got rich writing "The Monuments of Mars" which Wikipedia said he wrote in an L.A. jail, no explanation given. BTW, the cover of the book quotes Sir Arthur C. Clark saying, "I'm convinced we have discovered life on Mars" but I can't find any source for that quote. It's not in his long list of quotes at the Clarke Institute web site. Perhaps Clarke realized he jumped to a false conclusion. Then Hoagland went full on NASA conspiracy with "Dark Mission: The Secret History of NASA" and claimed they were covering up incontrovertible evidence of alien life. He claims there are stacks and stacks of "classified material" from the agency. Then things got silly when he claimed that he and some other guy designed the famous Pioneer 10 plaque and that Carl Sagan nobody had nothing to do with is. As you would expect he's adjusted this story several times as the evidence demanded. I'm sort of glad that I had forgotten about him.

He was even able to ride the wave of Monuments’ success into actually giving several lectures at the United Nations, one on Mars and one on the Moon. They were later released on VHS and dvd.
Hazzard Posted April 23 #17 Share Posted April 23 (edited) An "interesting" guy no doubt. What I remember the most besides the face on Mars (Cydonia) is the claim that Mars hosted a species of giant glass worms (or transportation tubes) .. later debunked by Phil Plait back in 2001. http://cosmicdiary.org/lfenton/2014/05/19/debunking-hoaglands-glass-worms-with-hirise/ Edited April 23 by Hazzard 4

A few years back we had a "nonlinear" member trying to claim almost everything on Mars was evidence of life, I recall members exposing his fails over and over it got really heated a few times , can't recall his name.

I remember some crazy guy had a web site that featured every picture from the surface of Mars that looked remotely like something living on Earth as proof of Martian life. For example, he concluded that the round rocks they found on Mars that NASA called "blueberries" had to be fossilized berries. There was simply no other reasonable explanation. Of course we find round rocks near water sources all the time but... these were fossilized berries, dammit!
