Probably not at Penn State main campus, over 90% of the students who go there live in apartments off campus, about 46,000 under grad students and only dorms for approximately 5,000 undergrad and grad students, a large percentage stay at the campus/town year round regardless if they are taking summer classes or not.

Not necessarily. Most don't go off campus until their junior year according to themselves. They can't stay on campus when the school is out of session at a lot of them.

“I loved living on campus, but I don’t like the fact that we have to move out during the holidays and stuff,” Saldanha said. “If I wanted to stay on campus next year, I still have to move my things out … that gets hectic because I’m an international student.”

I went to Penn State main campus for my engineering degree, finding off campus housing is critical and really annoying.  By PA state law all freshman need to have a dorm room or commute from home, some loopholes but they don't apply to most people, and the amount of freshman at PSU main is about 4,000 so the remaining dorm rooms are decided by lottery with approximately 10,000 to 15,000 students trying to win a dorm room.  A lot of students don't even enter the lottery for a dorm room.

Rent in the town of State College is expensive, average rent price when I was there was approximately $1,000 per person per month, the high end aparentments the students from the Gulf states or just rich students lived in were $3,500+ per person per month.

Stuff might have changed since I was there though.

Mosab Hassan Yousef had better have some top notch security or I'm afraid they'll get him.

He himself has admitted he's a target. He also said that had his father not been one of Hamas' top leaders, that he too would have paid the price for his son's defection. After his stint with Shin Bet was over, Mosab Hassan Yousef applied for asylum in the US, and it was granted. He also concerted from Islam to Christianity, but kept it a secret for many years fearing his family might become targets for religious persecution.

His story of growing up in Palestine, his involvement with Hamas, and subsequent defection to Israel is quite interesting.

I know a lot of businesses around my area hold jobs for students who come home for the summer. The article I found says a lot of universities don't allow it and I'm thinking with the price of going to school plus rent is just too high for most students unless their parents are really able to help them.

The overwhelming majority of the leases at State College are year leases, a few are by month but those are rare, so the student is paying for the summer months regardless if they are living there or going home.

From my experience about half to two thirds of the students stay in the town/campus over the summer depending if you are looking at it as staying there completely or partially.

Things have gotten so expensive though. My nephew's daughter just graduated last year from Acadia which is outside of Philadelphia. She lived at home her first year and dorms for the last three. She went on 2 school sponsored trips to Europe, one ending early because of covid restrictions made on re-entering the country from overseas. She rode on their equestian team for 4 years, which is why she chose that school. Arcadia had a very high academic standard so my nephew and her mother were happy with her choice. They were both helping her but she still graduated with @ $250,000 in student debt. It's a lot more to attend college now than it was when I went and I'm probably older than you. Rents are a lot higher now than they were just a couple of years ago and food prices are outrageous. Most college students don't cook anyway. They eat take out or go out to eat. Some have parents wealthy enough to really support them but most seem to rely on scholarships and grants.

I know if me and my kid went through all that expense and they couldn't have a graduation ceremony that I could attend and share the memories with them, I'd be furious :P

Note: It appears the video in the article is accessible to US residents only.

Or non-residents with a VPN ;) I don't have a VPN on my work computer, but I'll be checking the video when I get home. Thanks for posting.

Here's the article I read on the subject:

Pro-Palestinian protesters are backed by a surprising source: Biden’s biggest donors

Some of the most outspoken groups against Biden and Israel get funding from foundations attached to some of the biggest names in Democratic circles.

https://www.politico.com/news/2024/05/05/pro-palestinian-protests-columbia-university-funding-donors-00156135

I'm sure I've been reading posts of people claiming that there is no evidence that these people are Biden supporters, I think this argument can be put to rest now. If the protesters aren't Biden supporters, the donors financially supporting them certain are. Thanks KAJ :tu:

I was just watching this.

I was just looking at pictures of the encampment at UCLA. These environmentally woke students have the place looking like a garbage dump. The whole front of the library building is completely destroyed. They've been relieving themselves somewhere. I wouldn't touch that place without a hazmat team.

UCLA's Royce Hall Left Covered in Filth and Graffiti Police Remove Pro-Hamas Protestors From Their Encampment - Culver City Observer

After police arrested or detained hundreds of pro-Hamas protestors, it could be seen that they had trashed UCLA's iconic Royce Hall, covering the landmark building in graffiti. "UCLA campus looks like a landfill after pro-Palestine protesters, many of whom are also environmental activists, demolished the campus," tweeted Colin Rugg.

I found the video I saw. They couldn't get into the library where the books are and I'm not sure I want to see what that looks like. It's called Royce Hall. I sure hope they don't expect anyone else to pay for this damage. They created their own mess. Maybe some alumni will.

They needed bulldozers to clean up UCLA. None of these students want to be seen on camera. They don't want to talk to anyone. It's too late now.

UCLA has gone back to online instruction.

This is crazy. There's a lot of videos on a playlist.

‘Student intifada here to stay’: Harvard activists defy suspension threat

Anti-Israel activists groups defied Harvard University warnings that their protest encampment must dissolve under threat of suspension, proclaiming the campus occupation movement a “student intifada” in a press conference on Monday.

Harvard out of Occupied Palestine’s press statement declared that “The student intifada is here to stay at Harvard,” came in response to both the administration's statement about the 13-day encampment and a protest coalition deadline for the administration to negotiate the implementation of their demands.

The following is quite an interesting interview. Yasmine Mohammed, an ex-Muslim, forced to marry an al-Qaeda terrorist, speaks out against terrorists groups (and other extremists) and how they recruit 'woke' useful idiots on university campuses and elsewhere. She claims it's a deliberate strategy on  to spread the word of Allah.

For those interested a video of Mosab Hassan Yousef speaking at Columbia University is posted in the following thread, along with a few other videos of him condemning Hamas, not only for their cruelty toward Israel, but also for their cruelty to Palestinians.

Pursue anti-Israel ‘outside agitators’ disrupting colleges — and end the nonsense for good (msn.com)

The left and its media allies want you to believe the protests roiling college campuses are spontaneous uprisings of morally fervent students worried about Gaza war victims. Don’t fall for that claim.

These protesters don’t represent most students or the American public.

Here are the facts: Just a miniscule 2% of people ages 18 to 29 polled by Harvard’s Kennedy School named the Israel-Hamas conflict as their top political concern, compared with double digits worried about inflation and other economic issues.

Reflecting on the incidents at Columbia and other New York campuses, Mayor Adams said, “Individuals unaffiliated with these schools had entered these different campuses and, in some cases, were even training students in unlawful protest tactics.”

New York University Board Vice Chairman Bill Berkley says these occupations appear to have been orchestrated by external groups. He wants the FBI to investigate

The Telegraph just bashed the BBC.

I don't agree that American students really had a whole lot of influence on British students. War memorials in Britian were being defaced back on Armistice Day. I said it on Eldorado's thread and I'll say it now. Shame on anyone who does something like that. Students just today defaced war memorials in Central Park.

White House: Behavior in video captured at University of Mississippi is 'undignified and racist' (msn.com)

The White House said the behavior captured in a video at the University of Mississippi is "undignified and racist", after a student was accused of mocking a Black protestor by making monkey noises during an anti-war demonstration.

The events at Ole Miss, the state's flagship university, have drawn widespread outrage and condemnation.

"The actions in the video are beneath any American," White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.
