Letters by Jewish Rutgers students, faculty decry campus’s anti-Israel environment

WASHINGTON (JTA) — One day before their university’s president was due to appear before Congress, hundreds of Jewish Rutgers University staff and students decried what they described as an intimidating campus environment for Jews.

“The entire university community has suffered through the disruption of normal university operations and an often chaotic and intimidating environment on our campuses,” said one letter released Wednesday by Rutgers Jewish faculty, administrators and staff, with 208 signatures.

A separate letter from close to 160 Jewish students at New Jersey’s flagship state university, also released Wednesday, referred to allegations that national anti-Israel groups funded and organized the protests against Israel’s war with Hamas.

Jewish activist who fled Iran sees shades of the fall of the shah on US campuses

NEW YORK — Mandana Dayani’s activism, she will be the first to say, has grown out of her own life experience. Forced to chant “death to America” and “death to Israel” as a child, Dayani and her Persian Jewish family fled Iran and came to America as religious refugees, where she has devoted herself to protecting democracy and Western values.

Police break up University of Michigan encampment; New School to hold divestment vote

US police broke up a pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel encampment Tuesday at the University of Michigan, less than a week after demonstrators showed up at the home of a school official and placed fake body bags on her lawn.

Officers wearing helmets with face shields moved in before sunrise to clear the Diag, known for decades as a site for campus protests. Video footage posted online showed police at times using what appeared to be an irritant to spray people, who were forced to retreat.

The encampment at University or Washington also broke up this week.  The only concession the University made was 20 Palestinian students from Gaza will now attend tuition free.  The big demand was that they divest themselves from all association with Boeing, probably the Universities largest corporate donor.

Those who have fled actual tragic and brutal conditions don't seem to even be able to budge the needle with this generations indoctrination.

That's quite true for some. There are others, however, who are desperate to get out and receive a proper education.

I watched a video recently of a man who managed to escape the brutality of the educational system there. He said all he wanted was to become a doctor, but that all he was taught was hatred of Israel and America. When he asked when actual lessons in science and other subjects were to be taught, he was severely beaten and sent to an even tougher school where he was beaten again.

He managed to escape to Israel, where he was helped by a Jewish family who fed and clothed him. It was then that he realized that Israelis were not the monsters he was told they were. He ended up converting to Judaism.

Our educational system has been infiltrated, not sure exactly by whom or what...but it definitely has been.

I feel bad,my niece is about to enter high school next year, and she knows next to nothing about world history, but is an A-B honor student.

Sometimes when she's around if anyone is discussing anything to do with history her face draws a blank, and then it's "how do y'all know all of that,we only learn about slavery"...

I weep for the future.

Most educational systems are the same in that regard. In Canada, for example, the focus is on Canadian and American history, with a smattering of European history. Current affairs is also taught, but not in any great depth. It's left to parents and the students themselves to supplement that learning.

I was stuck in the founding, Native Americans and slavery. Luckily I've always loved to read and studied a lot on my own. Starting with the classics enticed me to find out what life was actually like way back when. When we took road trips as a kid I would see the plaques and monuments, make notes and read about it when we got home.

Guess I have to look back and thank my former school then...we were done with all that by 10th grade 😆

Always enjoyed reading and learning on my own as well.

When I was in high school, which was a lot longer ago than that, we had two years to our history classes. First was from Columbus to the start of the Civil War. Second was from the Civil War through WWII. My senior year I had a class on government. We weren't taught much world history at all. I'm glad I developed a love of reading when I was very young. I still read everyday now. It's up to every individual to expand their horizons. I've since realized that the condensed version I got isn't always what actually happened.

In poll, 70% of New Yorkers say anti-Israel campus protests ‘went too far’

New York Jewish Week via JTA — Majorities of New Yorkers support peaceful student demonstrations for those suffering in Gaza, but say recent campus pro-Palestinian protests have “crossed the line into antisemitism,” according to a poll released on Wednesday.

The Siena College poll of nearly 1,200 registered voters in New York state, taken last week, also found that majorities of New Yorkers support a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war but believe the “protests went too far” and justified police action in shutting them down.

Interesting article written by a Jewish student at the University of North Carolina.

The protests aren’t peaceful: Believe their calls for intifada

On April 11th, the ADL released the first Campus Antisemitism Report Card, which assessed 85 universities and assigned them a grade (A-F) reflecting the level of antisemitism at each school, according to their research.

Along with MIT, Harvard, and Tufts, my college, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), was 1 of 13 schools to receive an F. I didn’t think antisemitism at UNC was nearly as bad as the Ivies, and I decried the ADL’s methodology, which evaluated public and private universities using the same criteria, amongst other issues.

Drexel University in Philadelphia brings in police to clear out anti-Israel encampment

PHILADELPHIA — Protesters pack up their belongings and leave an anti-Israel encampment at Drexel University after the school announces a decision to have police clear the encampment.

University President John Fry says in a statement that he decided to have campus police and public safety officers join Philadelphia police in clearing the encampment as peacefully as possible. News outlets report that police gave protesters a warning to clear the encampment and protesters left. Protesters didn’t immediately comment.

Most of the protesters left peacefully. No arrests were made.

Rutgers, Northwestern, and UCLA school leaders grilled over campus antisemitism on Capitol Hill

Leaders of Rutgers, Northwestern, and UCLA were in the hot seat Thursday morning on Capitol Hill before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce for their handling of antisemitism on campus since October 7 and specifically for their response to the chaotic encampments that unfolded earlier this month.

Rutgers President Jonathan Holloway, Northwestern President Michael Schill, and UCLA Chancellor Gene Block faced more than three hours of intense scrutiny in the Committee's sixth event held on schools' responses to antisemitism.

I was wondering why pro-Palestinian student (and other) protesters were relatively quiet about the ICC warrant applications, and then, like magic, this article popped up in my news alerts:

Anti-Israel activist groups don't care about the ICC warrant applications

With International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan’s announcement on Monday about the application for arrest warrants against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, it was expected that the anti-Israel organizations of the post-October 7 protest movement would celebrate to mirror the dismay of pro-Israel groups.

In contrast to the endless stream of condemnations from Jewish organizations of every denomination and purpose, the flurry of opinion pieces, and the castigations of the ICC by Israeli politicians, the protest groups have issued a few statements and social media posts about the warrant application.

Expect the university protests to die down now that summer is here and students have gone home.

Head of UCLA says school should have removed anti-Israel encampment before violence erupted

WASHINGTON – The head of the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) tells a US House panel that the school should have been ready to immediately remove an anti-Israel encampment that became the site of a violent clash with counter-protesters last month.

UCLA Chancellor Gene Block is one of three US university leaders testifying at a hearing of the Republican-controlled US House of Representatives’ Education Committee into the wave of protests against Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza that has unfolded on American campuses over the past two months.

Hundreds of anti-Israel Harvard students storm out of graduation in protest

Hundreds of anti-Israel student and guest activists stormed out of the Harvard University graduation commencement on Thursday to protest on behalf of 13 encampment demonstrators who were unable to graduate due to disciplinary actions against them.

The Harvard Out of Occupied Palestine (HOOP) coalition claimed that over a thousand activists walked out of the ceremonies to march to the Harvard-Epworth Church, where they held a "people's commencement" to honor 23 students allegedly placed on multi-semester probation and 5 students who had been suspended.

US professor deported for terror ties shares stage with Hamas officials in Istanbul

Sami Al-Arian, an academic deported from the US a couple of decades ago after pleading guilty to providing services to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), shared a stage in a panel discussion with a high-ranking member of Hamas, Jamal Issa, during a conference held in Istanbul last week.

And to think this person was allowed to teach American students.
