Shepherd’s graffiti sheds new light on Acropolis lost temple mystery

A new publication in the American Journal of Archaeology tells a historical detective story of a lost temple on Athens’ Acropolis. It all began with the discovery of ancient graffiti.

The ancient graffiti was found on a marble rock outcrop at Vari, 20km southeast of Athens. It is part of a larger group of more than 2,000 graffiti made by shepherds and goatherds, discovered and studied by Merle Langdon in recent years. They feature text as well as drawings that include ships, horses, and erotic scenes. They all date to the sixth century BC.
