And we don't understand their technology..... nor their intentions:

It would be a waste of space if humans were the only species in the universe.

Wouldn't be surprising.

Some info on the retired Rear Admiral...

"Gallaudet is a prominent member of the UFO community.

"He says he has seen footage of unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) and unidentified submerged objects (USO) while on active duty in the U.S. Navy, and has expressed support for David Grusch's whistleblower claims in US Congress, calling for the "de-stigmatization" of the subject across science, the military and the general public.

"He is on the advisory board of Americans for Safe Aerospace, which describes itself as a 'military pilot-led nonprofit organization focused on UAP'. He is a research affiliate with Avi Loeb's Galileo Project that searches for evidence of extraterrestrial technological artifacts."

If he’s lying then it means the intelligence and military communities are all lying. Pick which one is scarier

As far as I can tell, the universe doesn't care about anything.  But it doesn't need to.

Life seems to be a property of one way for organizing of matter.

Look up the Law of Increasing Functional Complexity. The creation of more complex elements and the chemical interchange between them from the Universe's birth leads up to life.

Back in my college days, the physics wags denigrated chemistry as a derivative science.  We all had to take it though.  The real gluttons for punishment stayed around a second year for Organic Chemistry.   I saw that the text book was the thickest I had ever seen and I chickened out.

That seems to be a tread with old retired bored ex military brass, make up stories of conspiracy and aliens and evil gubmint agendas and the super credious true believers fall for tales with zero supporting evidence.

Marcell pulled this on Friedman decades after the Roswell NN event none of the original reports mentioned bodies, memory metal or even wreckage that sounded like anything more than weather balloon wreckage even Marcels son who saw the junk on their kitchen table contradicts dads new tales,  yet all it took was stories and true believers went nuts
But hey Stanton Friedman earned a good living off duping believers.

That's a law that only applies in very specific and unlikely situations.

I just don't understand to what end? They have lucrative pensions and risk all credibility doing so.

They miss being relevant and/or listened to maybe. They miss being influential.

Some people are just natural attention seekers. They probably don’t care at this point about loss of credibility if they’re financially secure.

I don't know how military pensions work but i kind of doubt it would get yanked because some old has been geezer is acting like a looney sideshow barker selling snake oil to gullible rubes.
These cats had attention all their lives puesdo respect too now they are bored and who knows maybe Meshuggeneh.

It applies with the entire universe from the first sub atomic particles coming together to create hydrogen and helium to them starting to clump together to create population 3 stars and fusing more complexed elements, becoming supernovae to create clouds of matter coming together to create stars which fuse even more complexed elements, then the process keeps going until we have population 1 stars which nova creating more elements which come together forming compounds which create the chemical interaction which becomes life and as life grows more complex, so do minerals.

I write this without caffeine so I'm a bit dizzy....

Trying to condense the explanation for that law isn't easy. 🥴

OK, the law says that life has to eventually form everywhere. I didn't know that!

Simple life is probably common in the universe. Technological life is what is restricted.

And you base this guess on what evidence exactly?

The chemical interactions and organic molecules these new telescopes and probes are finding in nebula and on other bodies such as asteroids and planets.

Tholins, RNA molecules and such. They just found a RNA nucleobase uracil on the asteroid Ryugu.

We sent a probe to a nebula? I must have missed that.

Thonins and uracil are simple molecules and by themselves are useless for life.

So if you find a jar of sugar do you assume there must be a chocolate cake nearby?
