Life in the UK when Labour last triumphed over the Tories

Still Waters

Recommended Posts

An unknown book about a boy wizard, Harry Potter, rolled off the presses, its publishers expecting to sell just 500 copies. Paparazzi hungered for exclusive photos of Princess Diana. And everywhere, you heard the Spice Girls telling you to spice up your life.

The year was 1997 and it was the last time, until now, that Labour had seized power from the Tories, kicking a Conservative prime minister out of Downing Street.

Then as now, Labour won a landslide victory, ending more than a decade of Tory government - 18 years in 1997 and 14 years now.

But while it's tempting to draw parallels between Tony Blair and Keir Starmer, much has changed in Britain in the last 27 years.

Liebour sold our gold off, at the lowest prices in a big dip. It was a disaster.

Not surprising that contributors to that piece, like pro left supporter Adam Boulton, are getting their excuses in early for Starmer.

"The state of the economy and his own popularity allowed Blair to enjoy a honeymoon period.

"I do not expect that Starmer will be so lucky," says Boulton. "Bitterness and division have soured British politics this century.

"From day one he will be under attack for the state of schools, NHS, migration, which he has inherited."

If Starmers policies are effective he should have no need to worry?

Boulton seems to think that his man should get a free pass when it comes to scrutiny, or what he calls an attack, why?

I didn't read it as asking for a free pass. Just acknowledging that the right wing will start claiming all the problems he's inherited are his fault before he has any time to address them.

Guarantee the next time small boats are in the headlines, the usual crowd will claim its proof he can't tackle immigration.

We're two days in and some are already starting

Why should Boulton think things would be any different, its been the approach of the Labour party for years and Boulton has been happy to do the same to the Tories in interviews. Now the boot is on the other foot it is suddenly unfair?

Inflation is down to normal levels and GDP is growing. The problems Boulton makes out are not as bad as he claims.

It is a stable platform to work from.

Any continued growth will be taken by Starmer as his positive influence on the markets / economy and claim credit, even if its only a few months into taking over.

And even if economists beg to differ.

The difference of course being they had 14 years to fix these issues and failed. Labour has had a little over 48 hours.

So it must be reasonable to give Sir Keir 14 years not to fix things as well ? And not mention it.

Its not what we were told.

I'm a  fair bloke, I will give him a few years. But I suspect he will be in trouble before then.

Who will be their next leader?

Ah yes I remember it well Brit pop and all that Jazz.Blair did an ok job for a start but then he lied to Parliament over WMD in Iraq and the illegal War In Iraq.Followed by the Gorden Brown debacle.

Seriously though if it proves one thing Red or Blue they all promise you the Earth but then they screw you over once they get their feet under the table.

Life under Labour: everything worked.

We proved to be good at producing dodgy documents under Labour, for one.

Two jags showed his pugilistic skills were first class.

I can make a list if you like.

2J's put bus lanes in the outside lane of the motorway.

Hospitals became trust hospitals and could borrow money to build new infrastructure but instead of having a bank setup with reasonable interest rates by Labour to use they were forced to do deals with builders and much of the NHS bill to run services is interest payments on loans.

The forced switch to trust hospital, originally to be optional, caused untold deaths in my local hospital which triggered an enquiry.

Yep, everything worked fine.

Liebour inherited a very sound platform and then squandered it all away.

Bliar became a war criminal and told us he was guided by God.

Brown sold our gold.

PFI came into being.

Adonis invented HS2.

Boy they were awful.
