pellinore Posted July 7 #1 Share Posted July 7 (edited) It looks like common sense is going to prevail in Europe- first the UK, now France, has shown the door to the Populists. The US next, hopefully. France’s far-right National Rally has failed to become the largest party at parliamentary elections, according to shock exit poll results, which forecast the left-wing New Popular Front coalition is in pole position. In results which would deliver a bitter blow to Marine Le Pen, an exit poll by Ipsos suggested the NFP coalition will win between 172 and 192 seats, with the Emmanuel Macron-backing Ensemble group taking second place and Ms Le Pen’s party in third place. Mr Macron took even his own allies by surprise in calling the snap election last month, after the anti-immigration National Rally made huge gains in European elections. L.A.T.1961 Posted July 7 #5 Share Posted July 7 The French have avoided one 'Far' party to get another or block of parties. With no overall majority and little chance of agreeing policy there could be another election later this year?

No, they avoided a far right party and elected a left wing one. Not far left, left. And given left and centre coalitions pulled candidates to help the other win to keep the far right out, I imagine they'll find some compromise to avoid another election.

What makes me chuckle is the Right have repeatedly said (in the UK more than most places) that once we have had a democratic vote and have heard the 'Will of the People', that's the matter settled- it would be ridiculous to keep having further elections in case people have changed their minds. So that's it then, as far as the Right are concerned - they have to accept the moderates won, they lost, and they have to get over it. 1

Nope, just good co-ordination by moderate people to keep the far right out of government. Left and centre pulled their candidates strategically to avoid splitting the vote. Much like our election was a win for "not the Tories" more than any one party, this was a win for "not National Rally". You lose Cookie. A couple of hours ago you were crowing about how Le Pen was about to win. Another loss. And most importantly, that's another loss for Putin. Which makes it a loss for you 🙂 Edited July 7 by Setton

Yeah you keep telling yourself that. He can have his victory celebration with all his MPs in a Fiat 500. Did you just admit you know Trump is going to win? Farage isn`t far right, he`s a Tory that wanted the previous government to stand up and take more of a lead exploiting our post-Brexit environment, and wants immigration scaled back to exceptions only. With Brexit and a large national debt, the only thing any government can do is tweak the rules and wait. We don`t have the money for setting up whole industries which could maintain a competitive advantage now we are out of the EU. Immigration has gone to far, and most of them are not to fill skill gaps. Its the mass migration of low skilled workers. The Farage journey begins, to criticise it he should have focused straight down the centre on economics instead of stating his conservative economic values. If he had, he would have split the Labour party too. All fun and games I guess. Le Penn not getting in means yet more boats arriving on our shores. Think about her whatever you like, but lets be selfish and focus on its impact on the UK. More boats are coming! Blair is calling for ID cards, but they are already in existence in many EU countries and has done nothing to curb illegal immigration. Starmer has told him no, but he has also refused to leave the ECHR meaning he will lack the legal ability to deport anyone. Not good, more mass immigration coming. Brexit has also not been a failure, its just it hasn`t led us to pavements of gold yet. Edited July 7 by Duke Wellington

Yeah, yeah, he's not far right and I'm a communist, heard it all before 🙄 Based on the extra special Cookie political spectrum, Hitler's probably just a smidge to the right of centre eh? Quote Le Penn not getting in means yet more boats arriving on our shores. Think about her whatever you like, but lets be selfish and focus on its impact on the UK. More boats are coming! Ah ah ah. Naughty Cookie. Post 36 in this thread, you said: Quote Le Penn is about to get elected and has vowed to deport all non-native French from France. That means we will have several million immigrants knocking on our door. Now she's lost, you're claiming that means more boats. Poor Cookie. This double defeat has you all over the place doesn't it? Quote Blair is calling for ID cards, but they are already in existence in many EU countries and has done nothing to curb illegal immigration. Starmer has told him no, but he has also refused to leave the ECHR meaning he will lack the legal ability to deport anyone. Not good, more mass immigration coming. Same question that seems to have @OpenMindedSceptic running for the hills every time I ask: Do you honestly think that if we set the equivalent of MI5 the task of stopping the smuggling gangs, they wouldn't succeed? There's a reason we've gone 17 years without a co-ordinated terrorist attack in the UK. And it's not because we flew a tiny proportion of extremists to Rwanda. 2
