Does fake meat cause heart disease? Here's what the science actually says.

Recent headlines denounced plant-based fake meat — such as vegetarian sausages and textured vegetable protein — as unhealthy and claimed that their consumption is linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and death. But a closer look at the study underpinning these claims suggests a more nuanced story.

The real culprits are in fact "plant-based" ultraprocessed foods as a whole, not meat substitutes in particular, according to the paper that kickstarted the headlines. But there's an important caveat: "plant-based" foods include ones you might not expect — such as chocolate-covered biscuits, frozen pizza and sodas. The study, published earlier this month in the Lancet Regional Health–Europe, linked plant-based ultraprocessed foods to an increased risk of cardiovascular-related illnesses and death.

Mmmm...yes, scientists seem to be saying a lot of things these days especially if they get paid handsomely to promote something.

Either I eat real meat or none at all same with the fake milk, either I get real milk or none at all, same goes for anything else.

But then again isn't that how fake foods are made? Taking ingredients form nature, looking at it with near contempt then processing it until it is unrecognizable, pouring it into molds to make it look 'real' the selling it to the populace as something 'healthy' and 'desirable'?

Seriously, what is the point of being a vegetarian if you insist on eating fake meat? Why not get away from it entirely?

I saw McDonald's already scrapped there "meatless" deal with one of those companies, because they weren't selling.

Who would have ever guessed...

Why would anyone eat fake meat or lab grown meat I just don’t get it, but I guess that it’s appealing to vegans! As far as McDonalds goes, that was a crazy and expensive mistake hope they learned a lesson!

You're better off eating a bag of hot cheetos than any form of fake meat. Strange that some vegans want the fake meat. Like they're in denial.

I think they are in denial, no other reason for them to act that way!

Yes. I think that is the case. They want all the taste and texture but not the real thing. I have a relative (sort of) that went vegetarian but on Thanksgiving bought this culinary travesty called 'tofurkey' or something. Right out of the sloppy package it looked gross like some severed limb bloated with an undiagnosed infection and the texture was similar to soggy play dough and he bought it so he could make it look like he was eating turkey but was just some sloppy blob of textured vegetable protein.

He would have been better off just eating the veggies and whatever else was meat-free than to eat that slop. It is almost like some of these vegatarians/vegans are mocking us, pretending to be in a near culinary ecstasy as they choke down that simulated stuff they call 'food'.

I tried to eat some of those meat substitutes like the imitation chicken patties and regardless of the brand they are all pretty gross. The texture is like you are eating a thick jello with school paste mixed in.

I've had some of the fake meats myself🤮

I'm fine with having a black bean or portobello burger though.

Meat eaters have bologna, 3 meat sausage, barbeque, bacon, canadian bacon, foie gras, liverwust... the list goes on.  It's the same reason all of us like variety in our foods; it's stimulating.

I don't care for the texture of a lot of real meat.  Plant-based meat is better, texture wise.

Others do reasonably well with it.  Burger King seems to have no problem selling Impossible Burgers.

That...doesn't even make sense.

Being vegetarian or vegan means that one stays away from meat entirely and the vegetarian versions only add to temp a person to eat meat because of the synthesized smell, taste and texture. Vegans and vegetarians have plenty of variety to choose from too without resorting to fake meat, fake cheese, fake butter and fake eggs.

Portebella mushrooms do taste good with a nicely seasoned sauce though and seem to be rather resilient when it comes to cooking. Never had a sammich with black bean though. Wait...does hummus count?

The idea was "why do they need to spruce up veggies" and my answer should have indicated "because we can.  Because we can make fun and interesting new types of food by processing basic products such as meat (to get smoked meats, sausages, etc) or vegetables (turned into fake meat and so forth)
