Abramelin Posted July 10 #1 Share Posted July 10 (edited) The year 2021 saw the most successful orbital launches and the most humans in space at any one time. While so many of us are gazing skyward at the possibility of interstellar travel, a few of us are also exploring the potential impact subterranean fungi could have on our ability to boldly go where no one has gone before. As a companion for space travel, fungi may not be your first choice, but their unique growth habits, high nutritive value, therapeutic benefit, and ability to withstand extreme environments could prove essential to long distance space travel. In fact, mushrooms thrive so well in space many believe them to be of extraterrestrial origin. Earthly or not, we’ll discuss the many ways mushrooms could assist humanity in future space exploration. https://northspore.com/blogs/the-black-trumpet/how-fungi-can-support-life-in-space Edited July 10 by Saru Trimmed for length 3
Abramelin Posted July 10 Author #2 Share Posted July 10 Wasn't there a member of UM who knew a lot about fungi? I think her/his name was something like Beautiful-Gorilla. S/he met Stamets.

S/he met Stamets. My sister did mycology field work. There is a "ghost fungus" floating around. It's DNA is found everywhere but the fungus itself has never been found. It might be a mycorrhizae and function as literally a world wide system which is beneficial to all organisms like the mycorrhiza system which helps regulate forest systems but it doesn't seem to be harmful. It would be interesting if it is also found in space.
