Spain: Thousands take to the streets to demand Britain 'takes back its drunks'

It is so peculiar that so many Brexiters want nothing to do with Europe yet make themselves a nuisance there every summer. Why don't they get drunk and whoop it up in Skegness or Blackpool every year?

Anti-tourist campaigners in Majorca have mocked England's Euro 2024 final defeat against Spain and demanded Britain 'takes back its drunks' as thousands demonstrated against holidaymakers this evening.

Up to 50,000 locals descended onto the streets of the Majorcan capital Palma tonight as they called for curbs on the amount of foreign visitors allowed on the Spanish island.

Among them was one who held aloft a picture of England full-back Kyle Walker accompanied by the words: 'The only thing coming home is you'.

The mass protest, which is the second in two months to be held in the city, also saw people hold up banners written in English saying: 'Take back your drunks, give back our homes.'

They have a very gpod point but the main problem it's their local economy that depends to some good degree on these drunks.

I am sure they are getting drunk at their local pubs but they want to do it in places where the weather is much better 🤗

And you want to align yourself with these blatant UK-hating continentals, who have never liked us in the first place, just our money? Sounds about right for you pellinore, anything to bash the UK eh, your own country.

Strange how countries have taken money from UK tourists for decades, built up wealth, created GDP, enjoyed the spoils but now...

The headlines are tourist out campaigns, heatwave warnings and airport delays warnings to get people to stay in their local area... 15 minute city anyone?

It is orchestrated BS.

As for them being Brexiters, as alluded to by Pellinore, it's the leftists that are mouthy, campaigns heavy, hold up motorways, force their way into government buildings, throw paint around. The drunks are entitled champagne lefties, they know their rights lol.

The other side of the coin.

The Spanish fightback against record tourism

Like thousands of Majorcans, Sonia is protesting this weekend against the surge in tourism that is being blamed for plummeting living standards among the local population.

Activists say spiralling housing costs are being driven by a huge number of houses and apartments being bought by foreigners, or at least rented out to them for large chunks of the summer.

.. it is a myth that Majorca needs ever-expanding tourism to survive, and that the reality is many locals are preparing to leave for good because they can no longer afford it here.

It's been going on long before the EC Final.

Tourists take over every corner of the island, and they are not only from the UK.

American and Australian tourists aren't good either. My sister has some "war stories" from Spain and Italy.

American tourists ruined Amsterdam. I couldn't enjoy it with all those mannerless idiots looking for a legal high. Then at this Austrian campground on the Danube they were such rubes, I switched to a Northern accent and my sister and her husband only spoke Dutch and we avoided them completely.

The change in travel arrangements for the brits after brexit should, if the story about traveling to Europe is to be believed, slow down UK arrivals in Spain.

Apparently it is not the barrier to travel it's supposed to be. As there are more brits than ever?

So we have drunk brits and 50,000 locals objecting to them, the 50,000's grasp on the effects on the economy is obviously lacking.

Reminds me of a Churchill quote. When he was challenged by his landlady of coming back drunk he pointed out that in the morning he would be sober but she would still be ugly.

The brits will sober up but the 50,000 will still have no clue.😉

I always hated Spain, Turkey was always a better bet and the Turks more friendly and welcoming.

The Spanish were more than Happy back in the seventies to take our money when Miguel was still going to work on his Donkey.

Spain logged a record 21.8 million international visitors this summer, official data has revealed, during a period when anti-tourism protests also took place across the country.

The figure is a 7.3% rise on 2023, the national statistics institute (INE) said.

Spain is the world’s second most popular tourist destination after France and in July received 10.9 million visitors and as many again in August, according to the INE.

The tourism minister, Jordi Hereu, called the impact of tourism “a great success for the wellbeing, social cohesion and economic development of Spain”

The rising number of tourists has not pleased all Spaniards, with protesters making their feelings known in recent months, notably in Barcelona, Málaga and the Canary and Balearic islands.

They have a hide to complain.  I was in southern Portugal (Algarve region) a few years back and it was literally invaded by Spanish who go there because its cheaper. But I suppose if it's because these tourists get drunk and cause mayhem their irritation is understandable.

Many Aussies have had similar bad conduct in Bali despite their friendly hospitality.

It’s well past the August holiday peak, but anger against over-tourism in Spain is spilling into the off-season, as holiday-makers continue to seek winter sun.

On Sunday locals in the Basque city of San Sebastian plan to take to the streets under the banner: “We are in danger; degrow tourism!”

And in November anti-tourism protesters will gather in Seville.

Thousands turned out last Sunday in the Canary Islands, so the problem is clearly not going away.

Didn't have to, the pin heads outed themselves. The idiots expect the EU to fall apart now the UK has left. These are idiots living in Spain who voted for Brexit. The Brits living in France didn't vote for Brexit, but that is because France is more more culturally inclined with the more cultured parts of the UK, such as the South of England :

“I am quite pleased that we did what we did. We will have the last laugh when Europe falls apart.”

So one po-ed and now every Brit in Spain is a brexiteer.  Funny, almost seems like if you lived there you may want to stay in the EU.  You've got BDS

I would like to retire to Spain or Greece, yes.  And I would like to be able to travel feely in my own continent, much as I presume you enjoy the right to travel over North America freely. But our rights to do so have been scuppered by people who just want to spent 10 days whopping it up in Benidorm once a year.

Absolutely your opinion with nothing but bigoted stereotypes to enforce it.  Probably 100% accurate :tu:  You should be a republican
