Rare white squirrel spotted roaming the streets in Welsh town

Locals have spotted a rare one-in-100,000 white squirrel running around a Welsh town. Maria Smith spotted the creature in front of Ystrad Mynach library in Caerphilly borough on Saturday morning.

Sharing pictures and video footage of the rodent, she said she "finally" caught a glimpse of it after seeing others share the unusual sight. A second resident named Kev Hart shared more pictures with WalesOnline and said he sees the creature at least once or twice a week.

The squirrel appears to have red eyes so it is thought to be an albino squirrel

More than anybody needs to know about white squirrels:

A few years ago, there was a white squirrel in the neighborhood; she managed to live five years or so in the wild. I called her Bernadette (long story). I believe she survived so long because she understood how to blend in despite being white all over. It also helped, I think, that she had some human fans. She never seemed to get the hang of "Have a Heart" traps, however, and was caught at least twice that I know of. The first time was by a guy who didn't want squirrels invading his buildings; but he was so charmed by her, he just let her go. The second time, I discovered her before the trapper did, so of course I let her go. She seemed grateful for the favor, but embarrassed that she had fallen for a trap AGAIN (Yeah, I know, unwarrranted anthropomophization) and worse, that I would know she had fallen for it twice (did I mention that I know about unwarranted anthrowhatever?).

Before her, I'd never been able to communicate with her species, "Carolina Grey" squirrels (except on the Boston Common and the Public Gardens, where the greys accost people for food and basically interpret any human vocalization as "Come and get it"). She was a good teacher.

Olney Illinois is home of the white squirrels and they can be found in several places within the city. In 1941 they had a population of about 800 which has decreased to less than 100 due to predation and genetic drift. The city has enacted laws that include that dogs and cats are not allowed to run free and if you harm a white squirrel the fine can be up to 750.00 dollars. Yeah you don't want to accidently run over one.

They say that extinction of the population is possible by 2034 if steps are not taken to protect them.
