Just as i would for any sporting event dipping into politics. Enough people complain, or fail to show (lost money), or to watch (lost money), and the next time they think about it more. And perhaps dont offend hundreds of millions of people.

I think rightly so.

What was political?

It just seems more like you are punishing the athletes for something well out of their control and have no input into.

My not watching is punishment? Id rather say its not supporting the organization producing the event.

If you dont go to a movie, because its too violent, are you punishing the actors?

It could have been in celebration of ancient Greece, but its not hard to smell the politics behind much of the show. I believe I read the guy who produced it admits to having an agenda.

Freedom of expression... I dont believe thats the Right. I believe thats the Left.

Except the "Cancel Culture" Left. Theyre all about what each person should, and shouldnt do, and those who disagree need to be punished.

Especially those CIS gender, social normative, breeder, white Christian people.

Sure, it's the left that's been arguing for years that they should have the right to offend whoever they like, stoke tensions, foment hate online, refuse service to whoever they like etc, etc, etc.

DC,

To me FOE reflects a tension often observed in political discussions about free speech.

The right tends to emphasize the importance of free speech basically, the idea that people should be able to express their opinions freely, even if they are controversial or unpopular.

While the left advocates for free expression as well, the “no, not like that” to me suggests that there are limits to that expression, especially when it comes to hate speech or speech that can hurt others.

It is a common tug of war in American culture.

I really think the similarity was unintentional and superficial. I don't think the White House or anyone has need to condemn it.

I do think it was intentional, but it also used clever/intentional characters as an excuse to "hide" the provocation, regardless it was in really poor taste.

I learned that Dionysus or Bacchus was like Jesus Christ from Aleister Crowley.

Actually, what you saw was the final pose and it was cropped.  The whole thing begins as a fashion show and the table is a "catwalk."

Now, I might not be Christian, but I'm quite positive that the Last Supper did NOT begin with a catwalk featuring designer outfits (or pseudo-designer outfits) and ending up with a man on a tray covered in fruits and vegetables.  I certainly would have noticed that when I read the Bible.

Yep, the Left. Trump staffers tossed from restaurants. Cancel Culture attacking Republicans everywhere. Woke groups posting CIS hatred.

What I read was they posed at the end, and only because the "table" has to have all of them on one side, did it look similar.

I still think they could have dpne better than a Dionysusian romp. A god of (basically) drunken violence and sex.

Has Athena, and Nike, been done so much to death that we're falling back on "Look, look... Men dressed like woman?".

I mean, it is France though... So...

Drag is a fine old European tradition and nobody there is shocked or offended by it.  In England (and possibly the entire UK) there's a tradition of doing silly Christmas plays where men dress up as women and vice-versa.  If you watch a lot of British tv (we love BritBox), it's a very common thing.

And yes, Europe is a lot more liberal about sexual matters.  So, it fits completely.

I am rather glad the US government did not step in and condemn the opening ceremony.  All of the debate we had on free expression on the internet and Twitter hinged around the concept that even people who disagree with you have a right to expression.
