Mystery surrounds US woman found starving and chained to tree in India

Mystery surrounds an American woman who was found chained to a tree "screaming" in a forest in the western Indian state of Maharashtra.

Lalita Kayi, 50, was discovered a week ago in the dense forests of Sindhudurg district after her cries for help were heard by shepherds. They alerted the police who sawed off the chain and rescued her.

Ms Kayi, who appeared completely emaciated, was taken to hospital. Her physical health has since improved and, on Friday, she was moved to a psychiatric facility for further treatment, doctors treating her told the BBC.

In a written statement to the police, she has alleged that her husband "chained her and left her in the forest to die without food or water".

It appears to be a domestic squabble that ended in a tragic outcome.

Hopefully, the culprit involved will be nabbed and brought to justice.

I would like to list some observations of mine. There is a large western and foreign population in India, and the said lady could have contacted this community , especially with women, for guidance, networking and security reasons. ( They could also do the same with people in their home country or the local police)

Upon not getting timely status updates from her through communication channels in the cellphone or email or internet, they could have alerted the authorities and police or local detectives themselves, which could have led to a quick and timely rescue. These days, there are many technological devices for safety purposes and they can be learnt and deployed.

Tourists should also research the place and people they are visiting, use services of official or licensed guides and should not naively trust random people they may happen to meet. It is also better if they go in groups of relatives or friends, as loners may attract predators. 

This goes for people and tourists anywhere in the world as it is better to be safe than sorry.

If anyone remembers the brutal gang rape and murder of a young female student in 2012 then this latest incident isn't much of a mystery.
