Brexit red tape is jeopardising UK food safety, retailers warn

In a letter to Steve Reed, the Environment Secretary, an influential group of food makers, hauliers and farmers said they were “deeply concerned” over the threat to Britain’s food security, biosecurity and food safety amid rising delays and friction.

New border controls came into force in April, meaning EU goods now face more checks when entering the UK.

However, writing to Mr Reed last week, the SPS Certification Working Group warned of major issues at the border, saying: “Perishable and other foods are being delayed entry, resulting in food waste and financial loss.”EU red tape is jeopardising UK food safety, retailers warn (archive.ph)

British farming is under threat from deadly African swine fever which is heading to the UK, a leaked government report has warned. 

The government document revealed it is 'probable' that the virus will reach the UK within months, according to a report by The Sun. 

The warning comes after port health officials warned at the start of this year that they are 'barely scratching the surface' of illegal pork meat coming to Dover.
