Radio blackouts caused by a 'tsunami' of solar storms were reported across the globe on Thursday, and scientists say more disruptions are are on the way.

The sun released at least 15 streams of plasma, or coronal mass ejections (CMEs), in the last 24 hours that caused communications disturbances over parts of Africa and Asia when they impacted Earth..

NOAA also noted that radio blackouts are likely to continue until at least August 4, which would likely impact radios, aviation and marine communications and satellite operations..

The storms are predicted to bring auroras as to many northern states, including New York.

This flare is classified as an X1.7 flare. X-class denotes the most intense flares, while the number provides more information about its strength.

A "severe" G4-scale geomagnetic storm hit Earth this morning following a series of powerful solar eruptions, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced. The storm has since subsided — but bright auroras could still be visible in more than a dozen states near the U.S.-Canada border as mild geomagnetic activity continues to crackle through the atmosphere.

G4-scale storms like the one detected this morning can have adverse effects on satellites, power grids and radio communication systems, NOAA added. Fortunately, most of these impacts are mitigable with advanced warning..

The aurora has been seen over most of the UK and the northern US last night, including my area of Pennsylvania. Many have also pictured meteors from the Perseid Meteor shower. It should continue to be visible tonight though not as brightly. Many in the UK are reporting now that they are seeing it.

Thats pretty cool, Auroras have also been seen in Korea but unfortunately where I live it has been too cloudy to see.

Here's a local news report for my area tonight. The meteor shower will still be visible tomorrow night. The sun is still setting here right now.

'You're bound to see something wonderful': Star gazers in Easton set for another chance to see annual meteor shower Monday night | Lehigh Valley Regional News | wfmz.com

So Mucklin says we'll most likely see shooting stars at the very least on Monday night. But while watching for this Perseid meteor shower on Sunday night, folks even in the Lehigh Valley reported seeing those rare Northern Lights.

In the early morning hours of Aug. 14, the sun unleashed the most powerful class of solar flare, in a potent X-class eruption. The solar flare peaked at 2:40 a.m. EDT (0640 GMT) and caused shortwave radio blackouts over the sunlit portion of Earth at the time of the eruption, Asia and the Indian Ocean.

What makes this X-class solar flare particularly interesting is that it erupted from 'rule-breaking' sunspot AR3784 which had already garnered the attention of solar scientists and aurora chasers due to its strange polarity.
