Alchopwn Posted August 19 #2 Share Posted August 19 I think the Jesus statement "It is easier for a hawser to go thru the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven" is quite witty. BTW, trust me, it's hawser, not camel, I used to translate scripture for a living, and a ship cable is a lot more likely than a camel, even if the latter is pleasantly absurd. As to Mohammed, there was the whole episode where he started dressing in women's clothing for an extended period, for reasons he never explained, much to the amusement of other people. Poor little guy probably had gender confusion and sexual trauma. Life was hard for dwarves living among the Bedouins. Buddhists laugh and joke a lot in my experience, as it comes naturally when you are not attached to the plodding misery of life. Many Buddhist parables can be read as jokes. For example, there's the one about the 2 monks who come to a river that they need to ford, and standing by the river is a beautiful girl in precious robes. One of the monks goes against his vows not to touch a woman, and offers to carry the girl across the river, and she accepts, and he laughs and carries her across. The other monk sees this and is fuming. The other monk just discarded his vow like it was nothing. The monk who carried the girl waves goodbye to her, and the pair of them wring out their robes, and let them dry in the sun. After a while they don their dry robes again, and head off down the road. Three hours later the other monk is still fuming, and eventually he cannot keep it in any longer and admonishes his comrade "How could you carry that girl across the river when it is against our vows to ever touch a woman?", the other monk laughs and says "I put her down at least 4 hours ago, yet you are still carrying her". As for Judaism, how about this one? Q: Who was the first person to break the ten commandments? A: Moses. The real joke is that there are two versions of the ten commandments in the Bible to reflect this fact, and most people don't know it. One is in Deuteronomy, and the other is in Exodus. It's almost as if God couldn't remember what was on the first version.😉 2

Deep laughter is emphasized in eastern religions as a sort of natural meditation that can lead to momentary cessation of the thought process and access to the Self or no-mind, leading to joy. https://buddhaweekly.com/laughter-the-blissful-state-of-non-thinking/ Quote Think about the moment of laughter. When you laugh, you are possessed by the laugh, in the present moment, no longer worrying about past or future. Laughter is a very powerful mindfulness meditation method. Thinking simply stops when you laugh. You experience genuine moments of no-mind. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has also expounded on deep laughter as akin to the enlightened state... https://wisdom.srisriravishankar.org/laughter-is-true-prayer/ Quote Sometimes you laugh just to avoid thinking or to avoid looking at yourself. But when you see and feel within that life is present and intense every moment, nothing can bother you or touch you. That laughter is authentic. You might have observed babies, six months or one year old. When they laugh, their whole body is jumping and bouncing. Every cell in the body is laughing. That is enlightenment. That laughter is innocent, pure, without inhibitions. A female enlightened sage named Anandamayi Ma had also recommended deep laughter as a valuable practice.. Quote Whenever you have a chance, laugh as much as you can. By this all the rigid knots in your body will be loosened. But to laugh superficially is not enough. Your whole being must be united in laughter.- Sri Anandamayi Ma

What is humor really? Sharing Sadhguru''s perspective in this regard.. https://isha.sadhguru.org/en/wisdom/article/laughter-really-best-medicine Quote If you are in a certain state of pleasantness within you, without knowing why, a smile will spread on your face. With a very little tickle, you will laugh. Laughter is a consequence. Don’t try to create the consequence. Work on the process, the source. Joy is not something that you have to do. If you do not disturb the basic process of life within you, joy is a natural outcome. Joy is not an achievement, joy is your original state. In yoga, we are looking at a human being as a strata of five bodies: Annamaya kosha, Pranamaya kosha, Manomaya kosha, Vignanamaya kosha and Anandamaya kosha. The word “ananda” can be interpreted as joy. So the deepest core of you is joy. If the first three dimensions of the body – the physical, mental and energy body - are in proper alignment, the innermost core which is absolute joyfulness will naturally find expression.
