A ton of Boar’s Head stuff near me got pulled from stores. All bolognas, liverwurst, most of the hams.

All the poultry and cheese products were fine funny enough.

The Shoprites pulled it down here too.

I started a thread and didn't remember this was here. I'll post what I found because it's really disturbing. I can't believe government inspectors didn't shut this place down until it was cleaned up after finding 69 serious violations in a year. They let them keep producing and selling their products to the public. They knew! Makes me wonder about their other plants. Boar's Head was the most trusted and well-known producers of deli meats and cheeses in the US. A lot of delis and sub shops use Boar's Head products. It all needs to be pulled. The company may suffer badly now and I see lawsuits coming. This is a well written article about what was found at this plant. Docy's CNN article is really good too. Thankfully I don't eat a lot of deli meats although I do go out and get hoagies. This just makes me feel sick. How many people did get sick but didn't feel bad enough to go to the hospital?

Boar's Head plant linked to deadly outbreak broke food safety rules dozens of times, records show - ABC7 New York (abc7ny.com)

Jarratt, Virginia -- A Boar's Head deli meat plant in Virginia tied to a deadly food poisoning outbreak repeatedly violated federal regulations, including instances of mold, insects, liquid dripping from ceilings, and meat and fat residue on walls, floors and equipment, newly released records show.

Agriculture Department officials logged 69 instances of "noncompliance" with federal rules in the past year, including several in recent weeks, according to documents released through federal Freedom of Information Act requests.

Between Aug. 1, 2023, and Aug. 2, 2024, U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service personnel found "heavy discolored meat buildup" and "meat overspray on walls and large pieces of meat on the floor." They also documented flies "going in and out" of pickle vats and "black patches of mold" on a ceiling. One inspector detailed blood puddled on the floor and "a rancid smell in the cooler." Plant staff were repeatedly notified that they had failed to meet requirements, the documents showed.

I don't know if I'd trust any of it. It's a wonder it didn't contaminate other products through either the deli case or the meat slicers.

Now everybody is talking about it.

Boar's Head plant linked to deadly outbreak broke food safety rules dozens of times, records show - 6abc Philadelphia

"The fact that they are having the same problems over and over again weeks apart is an indication that they really struggling to keep up with sanitation," Schaffner said.

Listeria infections cause about 1,600 illnesses each year in the U.S. and about 260 people die, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. People older than 65, those who are pregnant or who have weakened immune systems are most vulnerable.

USDA food safety officials did not immediately respond to questions about the conditions at the plant. Federal reports show no enforcement actions against Boar's Head between January and March, the latest records available.

Bill Marler, a Seattle lawyer who has sued companies over food poisoning outbreaks, said the conditions described in the inspections reports were the worst he's seen in three decades.

They had to know and were paying the inspectors off. I'm glad I don't buy their overpriced products and I never will.

But the maple honey ham remains unaffected, right?

It is always a dollar or two higher in price than the store brands where we shop. Maybe you don't always get what you pay for.

De-regulation would stop that problem.  <sarcasm>

There was a book written in 1905 called "The jungle".  It indirectly wrote about the conditions in meat packing plants at the time and spurred outrage which led to the passing of the Food Safety laws we have today: How Upton Sinclair’s 'The Jungle' Led to US Food Safety Reforms | HISTORY

Seeing stories like this makes me think that history is just repeating itself.

I had to read that in high school. It is a great book! Maybe people need to read it again.

Boar's Head has indefinitely closed the Virginia plant connected to the listeria outbreak. They will also discontinue making Liverwurst, the meat associated with the outbreak. Nine people died and dozens have been hospitalized. The outbreak was reported in 18 states.

"[Our] investigation has identified the root cause of the contamination as a specific production process that only existed at the Jarratt facility and was used only for liverwurst," Boar's Head said. "With this discovery, we have decided to permanently discontinue liverwurst."

The Boar's Head plant linked to the outbreak has not been operating since late July. Boar's Head said Friday it has decided to indefinitely close the Jarratt facility.

The company said it is implementing new food safety and quality measures to prevent future incidents. The measures include appointing a new chief food safety and quality assurance officer, a position the company said it is currently recruiting for, and establishing a Boar's Head Food Safety Council made up of independent food safety experts.

Love liverwurst! It’s great with sliced onions and spicy mustard.

It’s sad the company made the decision to permanently discontinue it.

You'll need to find another brand. Boar's Head made good products and I'm still surprised by what happened.
