The United States announced criminal charges on Tuesday against Hamas' top leadership, including the militant group's chief Yahya Sinwar, accusing them of leading efforts to kill civilians and destroy the state of Israel.

"As outlined in our complaint, those defendants -- armed with weapons, political support, and funding from the Government of Iran, and support from Hezbollah -- have led Hamas’s efforts to destroy the State of Israel and murder civilians in support of that aim," Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement, Reuters reported.

While I'm glad they finally took the time to formally acknowledge the evil, I don't see how it does more than possibly provide political cover in a campaign season.  These people are never going to ask for visas to come here on vacay, after all.  I'd prefer it if the Feds quietly sent a Seal Team to snuff them out, rather than set in motion steps that at best would lead to them being given another chance to push propaganda during a trial.

What an embarrassment the Biden administration is.

You mean,if these people are ever actually caught, instead of slitting their throats,we "capture" them and in 10-12 years maybe they finally get sentenced to 3 hots and a cot for the rest of their natural days on taxpayer dollars isn't justice....

Are you mad?!

Not only justice!... that's International justice!

What a joke.

Doubtful.  However, they can go after their money, funding and websites.  I suppose when charges are brought property can be seized as well. The ICC has no teeth, but Hamas needs money and they can cut some of the sources. I worked with an Iranian engineer once who got a visit from the FBI for contributing to a charity site that was a front for the Ayatollah's people. I don't know if he was aware or not, but that killed his job prospects in a business that was 50% defense related.  Charging people with being part of a criminal conspiracy for  giving money or aid may be a possibility. The US can push its allies to do the same.

As @Tatetopa mentioned, the ICC has no teeth, but the US does. Their terrorism charges against top Hamas leaders could impact, not only Hamas' operations, but their international standing as well. Hamas believed it could brutalize Israeli civilians and openly murder hostages with impunity thanks to its backing from Iran, Qatar, Turkey, Russia and China — and that it could do so while their leaders relaxed and partied in Doha, Lebanon, Ankara, and Beirut. As the article cited below points out, Hamas believes there are no consequences to its actions. It has friends in high places, or so it believed.  The article explains why the US charges mark a turning point in the public effort to bring Hamas to justice, and is worth the read.

I wonder now what does this mean for UNRWA, the organization who pumped billions into these criminals? Shouldn't they be seen as criminals too?

Have you ever heard the term "political theater"...

It kind of does feel at times like watching a s****y movie...but it's real.
