Still Waters Posted September 5 #1 Share Posted September 5 Emmanuel Macron has appointed the EU’s former Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, as prime minister of France, as he seeks to put an end to two months of political paralysis after a snap election. The French president said he had tasked Barnier with forming “a unifying government in the service of the country”. Macron shocked France by calling a snap parliamentary election in June that resulted in a hung parliament and a deeply divided political landscape. https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/sep/05/michel-barnier-named-prime-minister-france Related 1
L.A.T.1961 Posted September 5 #2 Share Posted September 5 FRENCH left parties today rejected the appointment of former Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier as the country’s new prime minister and called for nationwide protests. The appointment of Mr Barnier follows weeks of stalling by President Emmanuel Macron to find an alternative candidate to one put forward by the left-wing New Popular Front (NPF) coalition, which won the most seats in July’s National Assembly election. The NPF had nominated civil servant Lucie Castets to be prime minister. A right-winger, he previously ran for president on a pledge to ban all non-European immigration for five years and says France’s priorities should be to reduce immigration and public spending. https://morningstaronline.co.uk/article/french-left-parties-reject-appointment-barnier-countrys-new-pm 1

In theory he will be against any French UK deals as he described it as cherry picking when EU negotiator. But this is a completely different job and France needs any economically beneficial help[ it can grab hold of. Barnier will now have to rediscover the benefits of pragmatism. France is first, the EU a distant second. 😉

L.A.T.1961 Posted September 10 #6 Share Posted September 10 The UK GDP number does not indicate a pro-rata shrinkage in the UK economy if the 80% reduction number is a true indicator. In fact - UK’s momentum remains ‘healthy’ ahead of latest GDP figures. New figures are expected to show that the economy’s surprisingly strong start to 2024 will continue into the second half of the year in a boost for Keir Starmer’s Labour government. Economists think that the latest monthly GDP figures, set to be released on Wednesday, will show that the economy grew 0.3 per cent in July. The United Kingdom’s (UK) ILO Unemployment Rate eased to 4.1% in the three months to July Meanwhile, Average Earnings excluding Bonus in the UK climbed 5.1% https://www.cityam.com/uks-momentum-remains-healthy-ahead-of-latest-gdp-figures/
