Germany could adopt Rwanda plan paid for by UK

Germany is considering deporting migrants to Rwanda, where it could use asylum facilities paid for by the UK.

Joachim Stamp, Germany’s migration commissioner, proposed using Rwanda as a third party country for migrants amid growing pressure on the coalition government to restrict and deter asylum seekers from entering the EU.

He suggested it could be part of a wider move by the EU to use existing asylum facilities in Rwanda, initially intended for Rishi Sunak’s scheme to deport illegal migrants to the East African nation.

Sir Keir Starmer scrapped the Rwanda scheme immediately after winning the election in July, with the money saved by doing so switched to creating a new Border Security Command to smash people-smuggling gangs using anti-terror style powers.

The UK has already spent at least £318 million to pay for asylum facilities and boost economic development in Rwanda, which cannot be recouped under the agreement with the UK.

Not much respect shown for Starmer's pro EU position.

France installs Barnier as prime minister and Germany does the opposite to the very public UK binning of the Rwanda plan.

You might think they hold a grudge.

Well, the UK didn't utilise the Rwanda Plan, how many did they deport, just 4 individuals with a £3k bribe each? In the month Starmer has been in power, hundreds of asylum claimants have been deported: Hundreds deported on planes since Government came to power, Starmer says | The Independent

Good luck to the Germans, they won't have to leave the ECHR either, they are committed to Europe unlike the UK.

The ECHR will still take a view, although with caveats, as its Germany. But what is allowed is nothing to do with Germany being committed to the EU.

And as a view was taken by ECHR when UK looked at Rwanda there is now a precedent, something the Germans must be aware of.

“The adoption of the Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Bill by the UK Parliament raises major issues about the human rights of asylum seekers and the rule of law more generally”, said Michael O’Flaherty, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights. “The United Kingdom government should refrain from removing people under the Rwanda policy and reverse the Bill's effective infringement of judicial independence”, he underlined.

I agree with you generally, LAT. The Rwanda Plan was a stupid and expensive gimmick by a desperate govt. But if the Germans can make something of it, it is better than wasting money. With any luck we will have at least two terms of a Starmer govt and possibly be able to retake a top place in the governing of our own continent, which is Europe.

Not Africa, the Indian sub-continent, Belarus, Russia, or the Pacific which is where we are now headed.
