jmccr8 Posted September 8 #10 Share Posted September 8 Symbols and significance Samhlaidhean is brìgh There are over two hundred stones across Scotland with some form of Pictish symbol, many scattered across the Highlands. These symbols have added to the so-called mystery around the Picts and their lives. Archaeologists and historians today are able to suggest what they meant and why the stones were put up. The symbols are quite specific in form and restricted to certain realistic animals, geometric shapes and a few everyday objects. Most of the stones have these symbols in pairs such as on The Eagle Stone, The Gairloch Stone and The Skinnet Stone at North Coast Visitor Centre. Because the symbols repeat themselves it is now generally accepted that they represent a form of codified ‘writing system’ for personal names. One theory is that the symbols represent the various clans and lineages of the Picts, with the stones showing alliances between these groups. It is also possible that the stones may have served as a record of marriage between important families or perhaps they were gravestones or territorial markers https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://highlandpictishtrail.co.uk/project/art-of-the-picts/&ved=2ahUKEwjKkreFqLSIAxVeJDQIHQw2BG8QFnoECCIQAQ&usg=AOvVaw1_Xsiw8nor7V1314RnqzKJ 1

docyabut2 Posted September 10 Author #13 Share Posted September 10 (edited) Quote Except for some mysterious carved symbols, the Picts didn't leave a written language, so anything archaeologists find can shed light on Pictish society. In the case of the newfound metal ring, archaeologists noticed that it features either a piece of garnet or red glass in its center. https://www.livescience.com/archaeology/remarkable-1000-year-old-ring-from-scotlands-painted-people-found-at-destroyed-fort is it a ruby stone?
