Germany to put controls on all land borders

BERLIN (Reuters) - German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser will on Monday announce temporary border controls at all of Germany's land borders, a government source told Reuters.

The controls are intended to tackle irregular migration and protect domestic security from the threats of cross-border criminality and Islamist extremism, the source said.

Germany last year announced stricter controls on its land borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland in response to a sharp increase in first-time asylum requests last year.

More here. It's a pity the UK can't do the same.

Germany will bring in controls on all its land borders to deal with the 'continuing burden' of migration and 'Islamist terrorism', the country's interior minister has told the EU.

Nancy Faeser of the struggling Social Democrat party (SPD) has finally accepted that Germany has no choice but to enforce proper border controls if it has any hope of coping with the staggering amount of unauthorised entries.

According to German newspaper Bild, the new rules will see 'harsh rejections of migrants at the borders'.

Faeser has reportedly already informed the EU Commission of the decision, which is fuelled by deep-rooted panic over Germany's current migrant situation and internal security threats.

Well yes tensions are rising. Our Bundes-Olaf was very angry at the knife attack.

It feels like a deja vu though a ghost haunting us from the corpse a few years ago when in Greece and Italy they got swamped, the EU just let it rot instead of finding better strategies as far as I know.

So let's see.

It will be very interesting. I've always been centre Left (I always voted Conservative until the last lot of incompetents took over) and I'm certainly not Right wing, but I think Europe has to do something about the uncontrolled immigration.

If borders go up across Europe it will stop the numbers arriving in France.

All Schengen nations should do the same and admit idealism only works in a Star Wars story.

Brussels can do nothing

‘The end of Schengen’: Germany’s new border controls put EU unity at risk.

Italy, Norway, Sweden, Slovenia and Finland are also operating border checks, variously citing terrorist activity, the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, Russian intelligence activity, increased migration flows and organised crime in the Balkans.

As the guarantor of the Schengen treaty, the European Commission – which was notified of Germany’s plans on Monday – has generally accepted member states’ justifications for reintroducing temporary controls without demur.

Observers expect it to do the same for Berlin’s demand, despite the fact that there appears to be little clear practical justification.

This is how things breakdown at the end of empire, not enough money to persuade people that the problems with a system are worth putting up with.

Mario Draghi’s plan to fix a broken Europe already looks impossible.

Europe is less than the sum of its parts.
