The mother of a baby boy hospitalised after hot coffee was allegedly poured on him by a stranger has described the experience as “torture”.

The nine-month-old underwent surgery after suffering burns to his face and chest following what police described as a “cowardly” and random attack in a Brisbane park.

The baby remains in a stable condition at Queensland Children’s Hospital and continues to be closely monitored. The family is receiving support from Queensland Children’s Hospital social workers, a spokesperson said on Thursday.

The man who allegedly poured scalding coffee on a nine-month-old baby escaped overseas less than a day before he was identified by detectives, Queensland police say.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a 33-year-old foreign national accused of the alleged attack at Hanlon Park in Stones Corner on 27 August, with Australian Federal Police assisting in the investigation.

Det Insp Paul Dalton from the South Brisbane district Child Protection Investigation Unit, said the man was now believed to be overseas after flying out of Sydney airport on 31 August.

Dalton said the man was identified by Queensland police on 1 September – just 12 hours later.

What is wrong with people? Why would somebody want to do this to an infant? I hope this man is extradited and punished. What an a$$! My thoughts go out to the poor mother who had to witness this and I pray her little son will be able to have a full recovery.

All that reading and I have no idea what happened. We didn't even get a narrative from the mother of the incident. Was there some type of altercation or argument or what? Was it in a store on the street or what?

Yeah, stories like this cause me to wonder why are parts as in most details left out, although nothing justifies hurting a baby.

It is even possible the suspect will claim it was accidental and he got scared.

The narrative in the media is this **** walks up to a baby, pours hot coffee on them and then WALKS away.
Ohh and flees the country the next day.

Update although IMO the title is a little misleading:

Hanlon Park coffee attack: Identity of man wanted after allegedly pouring hot coffee on baby revealed

Now one of Queensland’s top cops has confirmed authorities know the identity of the suspect after his name was released by Chinese media.

Acting assistant police commissioner Andrew Massingham told 4BC on Thursday authorities were “committed to finding the individual responsible” for the alleged attack.

“Our international search continues for the person that committed that horrendous crime,” he said.

Mr Massingham also told the station the child would have “injuries for life” after the attack.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said they were “unable to provide any further information or context around this investigation at this time.”

They also “strongly advised” against publishing information sensitive to ongoing enquiries, including the name, at the risk of compromising the investigation and locating the person of interest.
