'It's not good': New statue to commemorate Elizabeth II divides opinion

A new statue designed to commemorate Elizabeth II - the UK's longest-serving monarch - has received a mixed reception.

The bronze sculpture, created by north Belfast artist Anto Brennan, was unveiled in Antrim Castle Gardens on Friday.

Since then, the statue of the late queen, Prince Philip and two corgis has attracted some criticism on social media and commentary from visitors to the County Antrim gardens.

Antrim and Newtownabbey councillor Vera McWilliam told BBC News NI: “We have to be honest, it does not resemble the queen in any shape or form.”

It's cute and human.  Not particularly royal or dignified.

If i walked past the statue and didn't know who it was portraying,i would assume it was a local farmer and his wife.

I'm pretty sure it's a sculpture of Julie Edge and Lord Charles, but I don't think Ray Alan [right] would be very pleased about being overlooked.

To be perfectly fair, honest and as polite as possible …. They look like Supermarionettes from Thunderbirds or Captain Scarlet.

It doesn't look like them! Queen Elizabeth was known to tie a scarf around her head when she was outside and at home. That was common for women of her age from the time they were young. Even here in the US. My mom used to do that. I don't think it makes for a proper statue though.

For a long time she also wore a headscarf when she was horse riding . . . no safety hat!

Apart from the Queen's face the rest of her looks right. The headscarf, her hands crossed carrying a handbag over her left arm, the tartan pleated skirt and she's wearing wellies. Minus the handbag that outfit was often what she was seen wearing at Balmoral. The same for Prince Philip, apart from the face he was often seen with both hands behind his back. The addition of their two corgis completes the picture.

My mum used to wear a headscarf, so did my grandmother.

I think her flunkies would have made sure she never saw it! To be honest, I think it's insulting.

A statue is like, forever. I think it's just that it shows her wearing a head scarf which she did frequently in her everyday life.
